Snared in the downspout

Elf in a garret

Before I force Acha to put back on his girl shape for more Wizarding Faire items, I thought I'd wear this neat C88 neckpiece from Shi. I tried on the large-sized leather cross-body thing from Shi as well, but the shape of it doesn't suit the boy avvie quite so much (I'm looking forward to trying it on the petite girl shape). Acha is also wearing more items from the Fantasy Gacha Carnival. I'm still addicted to it, and happy to layer on all of the curious and evocative items to make it seem as if my online dolly actually has a rich RP life. That Cellar Door Witches' Familiar hood, for example. I bet he wrestled the bear for his leather all by himself. (I lie, he probably just "borrowed" it from Jackal's workshop...)

With Evangelical
I admit to having a blogger crush lately on Ms. Evangelical Resident. I was drawn to her blog because of the very simple but crisp photography and the lovely styling. Then I noticed her skin, and realized that she was wearing Fade Lei's skin from Ugly Duck. I'm a sucker for all of Fade's skins, because they have a depth of artistry that makes the skin incredibly delicate, but never descends to Uncanny Valley. I remember her pouring over these skins, muttering to herself about the hundreds of layers that it took to give just the right shadows and highlights. The male skins were never boring, and the makeup was more like bruising and scars, delicately masculine.
So I asked Evangelical if she would photo with me for a small remembrance of Fade's skins, and she did. Her post is over here.
Thank you, Evangelical! And thank you, Fade. (Come back and make more skins!)

The data is trying to pretend

Mischief Managed (7)
Today I put on elf ears and had a moment of worry about mixing my geeky metaphors. I'm not exactly dressed for a day at Hogwarts, but I know how people in that world tend to treat their elves. Maybe this elf is simply a Harry Potter cosplayer who couldn't find a pair of human ears to put on to hide the pointy ears?
*cough* All whimsy aside, I'm wearing a few more items from the Wizarding Faire. I especially love the beautiful, many-optioned scarf from FATEplay. It knots, it un-knots, it flops over one shoulder, so many options it actually played well with my mesh hair AND my mesh satchel. (This is where I take a moment to sigh and say that I sometimes miss the old days when you could actually MOVE a prim or two around.)
I'm also wearing this gorgeous C88 dress from Schadenfreude, and tights too. LITTLE BATS. ON MY THIGHS. Today is a good day. (Why is Acha hiding her hands? Because Acha didn't have time to fuss with prim hands this morning. Pretend they're all pretty!)

The battery sewn in beneath her collarbone

Mischief Managed (1)
If you recall, I began my exploration of the Mischief Managed Harry Potter sim yesterday, dressed up as Sirius Black. I admit to you that I only got as far as the Hogwarts Express, and from there, couldn't figure out how to get down to the sim. Today, I totally figured it out! First you click over here, then you click on that thing, then on that other thing, and BAM. Magically in a courtyard! Obviously the sim is gorgeous. I especially like the continuity of the build. When you're walking around (in your observer tag, of course), clicking on a door will teleport you to a beautifully imagined room in a skybox somewhere high above. This allows the build to remain incredibly stable, but the room can be as ornate as it needs to be.
I'm wearing items from the Wizarding Faire today, skin and cloak and book and shoes. Regarding the cloak from FATEplay, might I suggest that you (like me) purchase the boy's version? I tried on the girl's version of the cloak, and was unable to actually attach hair beneath the hood, even the smallest hair that I own, without the hair emerging through the hood. Unless you really like tattoo hair, the boy's version seems to fit hair much better (although I did reduce my chest size a bit).  I really dig the cloak. It added a little mystery to my evil wanderings.
(And if you ever had any doubt about my true alignment, SLYTHERIN FOREVER. I am clearly up to no good.)

I'm Sirius

Sirius Black (4)

I blatantly misused my posting power over at It's Only Fashion to reveal a deep, dark secret from Acha's past...

And I'm showing off my hot new wand, too!

Our different accoutrements

Noots (1)

I've realized lately that one of my tragic character flaws is to take arms for a friend. In Life and Second Life, I've tended to act on the principle that the enemy of my friend is my enemy. It occurred to me recently that in this small petri dish that is Second Life, we're all basically the same kind of geek. We might be extending our lives virtually because our real lives have certain limitations, or perhaps for other reasons, but we are here because we find inspiration here.

I guess my point is that in this small land, there are no enemies and factions, there are just massive misunderstandings. We're all working toward the same goal, and when my unreasonable desire is to chew someone out for beating up on a friend, I have to consider that everyone here is human behind their wrinkle-free skin. I am Thai, so I'll slip in a little Thai Buddhism here (from the Dhammapada):

If a person speaks or acts with a pure mind,
then happiness will surely follow
like a shadow that is never left behind.

Chai yen-yen, self! (Keep a chilled-out heart.)

Today I'm showing stuff that I bought from the Wizarding Faire, and I'm in love with the newts. They are so well made! Hyasynth's plushies just get more and more addictive. I also adore these prints from Allegory's bestiary. I'll take a better photo of my new shoes when I get home tonight, but you can stare at the perfect witchiness here.

The Genii of the Stream

Oubliette in Autumn (4)

This morning in Plurk, a friend of mine talked happily of a funeral. No, not like that -- she was terribly sad at the funeral, but the funeral was a good one. I've been to a good funeral in my time. Once, actually. It was for my mother-in-law, a woman of spirit and verve from Baton Rouge. At the end of the funeral, my daughter and I danced out of the hall to "When the Saints go Marching In." I think the best funerals are marked by stories, good, deep stories about the dead person's life, and laughter joins the tears.

I was thinking about that this morning as I wandered through Oubliette. This sim is so deeply Autumnal now that it looks like Rivendell in its fading years. So many things in Second Life are fleeting that I feel as if sometimes I'm writing one long elegy. "This beautiful bubble of creation existed, and now it's gone." Will Oubliette last the Autumn? I hope so.

Today's title is from Thomas Gray's poem Ode on the death of a favorite cat.
