Love and thanks and send your review items to...

Wish You Were Here

O hi, it's me again, briefly.

A few designers have wondered where to send review packs of things that are kind of off-the-beaten path. I'd like to recommend that you peruse the Second Sanctuary feed for some awesome people. Anything free, send to SL*Freestyle, and anything pretty and more mainstream to the lovely ladies at It's Only Fashion. (I recommend these sites because I've worked for them!) Send boy stuff to Gabe Bookmite, who just started working for It's Only Fashion!

Also, I'd like to thank the following people for making me water-damage my MacBook Pro keyboard with excessive snuffling:

Infralovely, Grady Echegaray, Faery Sola, Fricka Morgath, Chic Aeon, and Cajsa Lilliehook.

Thank you also to everyone who sent me the IMs and Plurks and offlines and emails. It's been heart-warming, and (in the acronyms of Winter Jefferson), ILUSM. Reading through these made me feel as if the years I've poured into the blog meant something. I appreciate that so much, y'all. Since quitting, I've used my time to research music for articles, and whenever I miss blogging I snap someone else's photo or post something small to my Flickr stream.

If you'd like to take part in the revival of this cool bloggy challenge, the Same Damned Thing challenge, Cajsa is running it over here. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Lots of love,

Sunday, March 27, 2011 says goodbye

Click through to Flickr to see who helped usher out my blog.

Dear Second Life,

I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed blogging fashion. It's been an honor, and I had the most fun when I could write with other people.

I'm going to be focusing on real life writing for a while. I'm still going to be playing this game, but I'm just redefining what I play it for.

I'll leave you with a bit of advice from an old SL-blogging warhorse who's managed to blog almost every single day since I began in 2007: If you want to be a good fashion blogger, forget about metrics as a measure of success. Do it for your own satisfaction and for the love of what you do, or don't do it at all.

With respect,

Achariya Maktoum

So long, farewell...
Me and my trusty old horse photo sphere are riding off into the sunset.

Second to last post: Another Fundraiser

I am proud to be sporting a skin for Another Fundraiser today. I'm also in an outfit entirely from Japanese designers, from Tekuteku to Zero Number to DP**yumyum … I love the Japanese presence in Second Life. It's one of my favorite parts of the world, and seeing how they've been affected by the tragedy is honestly breaking me to bits. One of my favorite housewear designers, Nonino, is closing down because of her need to focus on events in RL. I can't even imagine what it must be like in Japan right now, and my thoughts are with her and everyone else in her plight. I supported Nonino by going and buying every one of the things I loved from her shop while it's still around; I'm supporting the Red Cross effort in Japan by buying up these beautiful skin mods. Hey Japan -- I ache for you, pray for you, and blog for you today.

From Sasy:

Another Fundraiser is back! This time we're helping Japan! 100% of all proceeds will be donated to Red Cross (for Japan). Second Life residents again have been encouraged to create skins, and make ups for this event, all skill levels allowed. There are a great blend of roleplay skins, geisha, makeups, and even guy skin! Come see, and help raise money!

Fashion For Life [last post]: Baiastice, Heartsick

Goodbye FFL!

It's strange to think that FFL is over already. Seems like it just got here... I've enjoyed the week. It's enormously fun to see what I can do with clothing outside of my usual milleu, and it reminded me to use new-to-me designers more often in my blog posts. This great skin is by Heartsick, and it suits this elegant and coppery shirt/dress combo from Baiastice. Now that FFL is over, I think I've taken from it a renewed desire to support designers in SL. They work their arses off, and sometimes don't even do it for money. Thank you to everyone who contributed, bought from, and planned FFL this year. Go, us!

Fashion For Life [07]: Grim Bros. Skin

Ezura/Grim Bros./Tekeli-li

We're coming to the end of Fashion For Life; the last day is tomorrow! Today's FFL item is actually this purply-blue cyberskin by Grim Bros. It reminded me that I haven't worn a brilliantly abnormal skin in a long time… I used to love MiaSnow's greens and blues and wear them all the time. This skin seemed to go well with Ezura's new release, this tiny ruffled cyber dress. I like the sheerness of the top, perfect for wearing over detailed skins or this nice cyber tattoo from HUZ. Today's Fashion For Life Link is to this article about Ikon eyes -- I'm really enjoying the "10 Reasons to Come to FFL" series!

Another Fundraiser

Another Fundraiser

Mina Jun contacted me the other day with a heartwarming (yet heartbreaking) message. She told me that she was donating her skin PDFs so that somehow, they could be used to help Japan.

Sasy Scarborough stepped up to the plate, and soon set up an Another Fundraiser. I don't know if you remember the last one, but it was one of the loveliest events in Second Life. Using Eloh templates, designers created unique and fabulous and cheap (50L each) mods, selling them at a skin event where the proceeds all go to the Red Cross. This time, Mina Jun's skin templates will also be there to draw from, as well as Eloh's and Sezmra Svarog's.

More information about this event is posted here at the Another Fundraiser site.

The fundraiser is looking for creators at present. If you've ever had an urge to see what your creative hand could do with a skin -- there's no better time or reason than this.

Fashion For Life [06]: Falln

Plastik for the Pacific Crisis fundraiser

Yesterday I took a day off from blogging and set up house with Miss Jackal. We have a big floating church now, and it's the first thing with a roof that I've loved living in. It's funny -- given how vast and various Second Life is, I can sometimes spend days in my own skybox, so where I live is vitally important! It becomes the game, for me.

Today, this decadent skin is by Plastik for the Pacific Crisis fundraiser (SLURL here). And my outfit (so perfectly in keeping in my new digs) is by Falln for FFL (Website here).

O Hi. I accidentally did not blog something for FFL -- instead, deceptively enough, this Elate! review pack was something that's out in her store. I am standing in the Elate! store in FFL even as we speak, though, and I really dig the dress that Kellie has in her donation vendors. It's the Chloe dress, and it comes in an awesome green plaid too, if your timezone still has some St. Patty's day left in it. I'm wearing the Brooke outfit here, and it's available at the Elate! main shop. As always with Kellie's designs, they're so flexible that I've thrown them onto furries and looked ready for a chic cocktail party.

Fashion For Life [05]: Nyte & Day

Today's beautiful Fashion For Life items are from Nyte & Day and MOOD. I remember that one of the first things I did as a blogger was to enter Nyte & Day's in-store poster contest. I bought a few clever sweaters and skirts and headed up to a roof, figuring I'd take some pretty good shots up there in natural light... Looking back through my flickr, boy were those shots shitteh, heh. Still, the clothing was strong, and I see that Nyte & Day is still going strong with clean lines and careful construction. I really like this dress, and it fits FFL's Beyond Black and White theme perfectly with the bright pink sash. The MOOD items are my earrings (not a great shot of them), necklace and bracelet. Imagine, they come with a color-changing hud for the metal and stones! I love the quirky curl of the necklace, it suits this outfit. Today's FFL link is to hunt information!

Fashion For Life [04]: Grim Bros.

It made sense to me at the time, but we did have a time change and my body thought it was 5 am. "Hey, let's photo with a stray giraffe in the background." This dress is by Grim Bros. for Fashion For Life, and it rocketed me back a few years to when Caledon was my Slife and I never ventured from its borders. This dress is rich and pretty, just the type of thing that would look perfect with hooves discretely tucked beneath the hem, and horns hidden by one's formal tiara. Today, I'd like to point you to the great article about fighting lag at FFL's blog. HAPPY MONDAY, don't let it defeat ya!

Fashion For Life [03]: Vanitas Vestures

FFL05_01: Vanitas Vestures

Lately, as an antidote to all of the sad things happening, I've been taking small breaks at this Tumblr: Hellocute! It has things that are fluffy and loving and small, and it's my kid's favorite website. I'm in a pretty outfit by Vanitas Vestures today. I love all shades of orange -- even as it mellows into cream and gold -- and I really like the golden color of this shirt. It's part of Fashion For Life, and today's blog post is about the awesome gatcha machines at the festival. Keep your chins up this Sunday and remember reasons to be happy about life!

Fashion For Life [02]: MichaMi

I hate waking up this week. The world is definitely giving us the signal that if we can't get our shit together and work as one, we'll never be able to fix the truly deep issues. Love to Japan, right now.

In the middle of all the sad, it feels good to blog about a cause like Fashion For Life. I went looking through the website this morning and found a lovely and very personal list of people's stories about why they've taken part in the event. Today I'm wearing MichaMi's Leather Dress that will debut at FFL. There's something about her clothing that makes me think BDSM. Hmmm...

The Pacific Fund

We interrupt FFL blogging for some words from the women who are running the Pacific Fund:

An emergency fundraising effort for the victims of the crisis in the Pacific that hit on the 10th/11th of march is being set up. SL is an international community, with a strong base in Japan specifically. This disaster is worldwide and affects us all, as a community SL has risen up time and time again to help out in times of distress, including very recently.

In september 2010 11,000 us dollars was raised for the pakistan flood crisis relief fund (UNICEF) at an sl event. An event organised in four days. This is an example of what our community can do, and we are attempting to prepare for a similar, simple but effective, event.

We are calling for anyone who wishes to help with this fundraiser. We will be providing vendors that donate 100% of sales to a charity account (Charity Shelter) for people to place in their stores and at an event location. The products in these vendors don't have to be new, but the more new and exclusive items available the more money we will raise, so even a variation of an existing product is appreciated.

We welcome any and all participation and interest in this event - if you'd like to participate as a designer please (apply here). Please note that 100% of all money raised will go to the charity UNICEF. Land was donated by Glam Affair and all volunteers are giving their time without charge.

Fashion For Life [01]: SYSY

FFL 01 ! - SySy 01

Remember RFL, Relay for Life? Now it's called FFL, Fashion for Life, but the event is the same. It's the longest-running fashion fair in SL, and all donations for it go to the American Cancer Society. It's going to be from March 12 - 22 across nine sims, and the theme for this year is “Beyond Black and White.” Er, hence my desaturated avatar here in a dozen shades of grey. If you'd like to find out more about it, go to the FFL website. They'll be updating often!

I'm in my first look for the fair, SYSY's prettily-wrinkled Hush dress. It's a sultry one-shoulder number, the better to display my painful HUZ sleeve tats. I hope to see you all at the fair!

A long time ago, I saw the connection between Second Life and the geisha's idea of the Floating World. Bright and flickering and ephemeral like a woman's first bloom of beauty, very little in SL stays -- or stays the same. Sometimes beautiful things disappear, and we're left to contemplate the memory. This is the case with Frick, a skin shop that took the notion of the Eloh mod into the realm of the fantastic and gothic. I've always loved Frick for the low prices and high creativity, and the skins have suited my avatar perfectly. After so many years, Frick is closing it's doors. Until it's gone, there is a sale, bringing the prices down even farther… Go get these whimsical creations before they evaporate into pixel air. (SLURL here)

Transparent like the president

So there I was hanging out with Jackal. We were chatting about this and that while I photographed, and I mentioned that I was checking to see that I hadn't screwed anything up. "You need a checklist," she joked.

"Yeah, like are my jewelry prims showing up? Check. Are my ears resized? Check. Any prims going through other prims? No? Check. Does the pose screw up my torso fabric? No? Check." These are all mistakes I've totally made in the past! Blogging once a day, every day, for the past three years means that I've made about that many mistakes. It's all learning!

So Miss Jackal got me this nice to-do clipboard, which she said I shoudl wear with a pair of really big glasses. Hence, this look. My little pants are new from Honey Kitty, as is my necklace. The necklace and glasses are color-changing!

You can't keep an old blogger down

50L Friday happiness

Oh, the things I do to SL. This morning, while not having my MacBook Pro, I loaded SL onto our Mac Mini media server. The graphics card is crap on it, so poor Acha walked around like an 8-bit for a while. Then I photographed on a PC and edited in Gimp. This makes Acha a grumpy panda, but at least all of my 50L Friday stuff is awesome. 50L Friday: Jewelry by League, dress by Katat0nik, skin and ears by Plastik. The hair is new from Calico Ingmann Creations. But hey, my MBP returns today - !!

A lot happened today that I did not mention at all

O hi. Tonight I'm wearing the boy version of yesterday's beautiful new boots -- Lassitude & Ennui's Highland Boots in low-heel. I'm also wearing the same hair and makeup as yesterday, and of course it suits my avatar no matter how many or few Xcite dicks. (You heard me. Nobody reads my drivel anyway.) The hair is beautiful new and long down my back by Calico Ingmann Creations, and the makeup is by Lillian Shippe. I think the gold feathery eyeshadow is totally Elven. (Everybody go buy Jackal's boots, mkay? Because they're beautiful.)

I want my MBP

"You dropped your glasses, sir."

This is day 100 of no MacBook Pro. Just kidding, but I didn't realize how much I depended upon it for talking to old friends... hanging out in SL... looking at blogs and the news... listening to music. Bah, I want the neural implants already. Instead, I'm being like Elusyve and blogging the photo that I took for the Gos Curvaceous Contest. I didn't win, hell no, the ones that won were UBER GREAT. But I'm reasonably proud of the vibe of this photo. "Lingerie-clad nurse stares at kneeling patient, informing him that he's dropped his glasses." Or, you know, something. The corset is from Schadenfreude, the undies and such from Katat0nik, the skin from Exodi, and the boots from Gos. I liked putting together a bunch of different ideas and seeing if it worked.

PCs have the illusion of CTR

Boots and a boa

Argh, I'm blogging from my husband's PC. This is harder than it looks, especially when my little fingers keep wanting to hit MAC keyboard shortcuts. Minimizing the screen and pulling up some damned menu whenever I hit the thing between control and Alt is NOT what I was after, goddamnit. Anyway, this is the outfit I had on before my Mac got water damaged. I'm sure you've seen the boa and face glitter already from Oh My Stars-o-rama. It's awesome. The bootses are by Lassitude and Ennui, and are more lickable than this PC makes them look. I get my little Mac back in a few days (I hope), but tonight was definitely a learning experience... Also, thank you to Berry Singh for talking me through the rough patches, like "How the f*** do you rebake?!?"

Dripping flowers from my hair

I really like the bustled "erotic" version of this new Ezura outfit, the Lolita Crown. The garters make my faun-girl feel powerful, as if she could slingshot small hamsters at you from between her. Uh. I think I'll stop there. Anyway. The hair is new too from Calico Ingmann creations, one of four new hairs at the shop. It's called Paige, and it comes in a version with a shoulder-attach ponytail, which is totally cool! Also, the flowers are color-changing. I've made them black, but there are a number of pretty colors for the less morbid. (SLURL to Ezura) (SLURL to CiC)

Not me: Ivey Deschanel with a super high arc

Ivey Deschanel
Ivey Deschanel of Sn@tch

I was so exhausted by life today that I couldn't even put on an outfit. In fact, when Ivey popped into my skybox she looked at me and said, "You're a little elf. Look at that hat." It's true, I had on an old winter hat-hair with a pom on it, and like a miscelaney of stuff that looked like crap. :D Anyway, aren't you glad I spared you that? Instead, I told Ivey to wear panties and as much crap as she could attach and still rez. She uttered the hilarious lines:

[16:59] Ivey Deschanel: you want blacks or flesh
[16:59] Ivey Deschanel: or just panties and tube?

Which I misread as "panties and lube." *cough* … And then:

[17:02] Ivey Deschanel: gotcha gimme a sex

Ribbons and bows

It took me a million years to get this outfit together, shoot it and post it tonight, partly because I've been watching endless Runaways videos on youtube. I was too young to catch them when they came out the first time. Either that or I was still listening to my stepdad's Bowie collection… I saw the crappy movie last night, but what impressed me most about it was the music. Hot damn, could they sing, and their songs were simply awesome. *cough* -- Ah, back to this shirt. It's a gorgeous 2011 redrawn edition of the ~silentsparrow~ ribbon top (I wore the original one the other day). Look at how cute the hand-drawn bow and collar details are! I love you, hya, even if you totally forgot about this shirt!

Go see the remastered release at ~silentsparrow~ !

Tee el dee ar

Yesterday evening, I had the pleasure of doing something I hadn't done in a long time: hang out with hyasynth while she did her thing and I did my thing, sometimes talking and sometimes in total silence... I spent two years in SL doing just this, fiddling with my inventory while hyasynth created. I'd usually work on two outfits; one for blogging, one for wearing after blogging. hya would do a million things - upload textures, answer notecards, manage her shop, respond to IMs. But our silence was always interesting and generative and occasionally punctuated by "You should tint that," and "ooh I like that texture."

More than many things, that feels like SL-home to me, and in a wash of nostalgia for the past, I came up with this outfit. I'm trying to Steampunk myself a little more when I'm off the blogging clock, and I hadn't meant to post this outfit at all today. It's really just for hanging around Steampunk sims. The outfit is almost entirely hya's stuff, with some additional Schadenfreude and Jackal's most awesome boots and Aikea's skin. I have to add that the present is awesome too. Jackal and I tend to get up off our arses and go do stuff (when our timezones intersect), and this is lovely in its own way. Okay, rambling time over. Enjoy your collective Mondays!

Other people's blogs

This post isn't about me. It's about two other talented people that you should go check out. The first is Fade Lei (who made the skin on Lillian, above). Fade started to blog her outfits, and let me tell you, her style is infectious and stealable. Go check out Fade Lei's blog here!

The second person is Lillian Shippe (above), who blogs skins and makes face paint. Her blog is here! The premise is that Lillian and Mako each put on a skin, and then talk about how different they look in the same skin. Shapes mean everything, right?

Both of these ladies have a unique, addictive style. Go check them out!
