Not so quiet Saturday

I am coughing up green stuff from my lungs today, which is why I've made my avatar so elegant. This was aided by a filmy new jacket from LOOKR -- it skims my torso like a layer of cobweb -- and MichaMi's Orla dress in Beige. The attention to fabric is lovely, especially the detailing of the strappy top. MichaMi always gives great bottom, and this dress is no exception.

I think I saw that there's going to be an accessory sale at Albero this weekend? I think I'll hop over there and buy something bright to shoo away my cold...

ItRS: (Miriel) Closing

Sometimes... you just don't realize how good something is until it disappears...

Missing Miriel VII

(Miriel) is closing, store and sim. Click here to see photos and read my reflection about the ending of this SL icon on my blog, Lifestyles of the Broke and Notorious.

Gothy beachwear and the Bubu

Every year I pose myself this question: what does gothic swimwear look like? This year, Kunstkammer answered that question. It obviously looks like the sexiest little tribal arse-flap ever, settled neatly below a tidy bikini. Don't forget SPF 300 lotion and an umbrella for more-than-complete sun coverage. The bikini is also perfect for showing off my new arcane tattoos from ~silentsparrow~. You can follow the legends in every line of the hart, thistle and thorn tattoo, ancient symbols of heraldry etched in avatar skin...

Then, there's the Bubu (bottom picture). Logan has been working on this avatar for quite some time now, and I've watched every step of the way. At first I was initially skeptical. "Isn't that the Munny?" I asked.

Logan said that he'd always wanted one but isn't able to get one where he lives, so he extended his appreciation for it into SL, where he's enabled everyone to play with the Bubu avatar. He's made it cheap and completely personalizable like the Munny, complete with his own neatly scripted spraycan that shoots a personalized skin over it. In the picture below I'm wearing a personalization from The Stringer Mausoleum-- Helena's turned the Bubu into a cute Elder God, and you can get this skin later today from her shop at Oz. (SLURLS below in credits). You can get a basic Bubu with a personalizable skin today, opening day, at Logan's shop over here.

Blogger Appreciation Post

Happy almost birthday, Teagan (it's Friday)! I'm wearing one of her birthday hairs, the Cuppi. I wasn't sure why it was called Cuppi until I donned the hair and looked. The buns are two cute cupcakes! I'm also wearing a fluffy dress from DP**yumyum, a color variation on the pink-arse one in the group camp chair. I love the fluffiness of it, and think it suits the colors of my Callie Cline "kick shickers." I have a weakness for cowboy boots, and today I'm wearing them out of appreciation to Callie for her nice idea!

Blogger Appreciation.

Closet Crisis:

Hethr Engle (Website here!) introduced me to blogging and taught me how. She's the most creative person in Second Life when it comes to mixing layers and putting together all-new outfits from many different designers. She also has adorable compositions and backgrounds, and my first-ever fashion post was to Closet Crisis. Thank you for everything, miss Hethr! I'm always learning from you.

Cajsa and Gidge:

Today I'm grateful for a few elegant ladies of style who do an amazing job of blogging Second Life clothing. First, Cajsa Lilliehook. (Website here!) What do I love about her blog? She always writes crisply and elegantly, describing both the clothing and the adventures she went through to find them. I can't be appreciative of Cajsa without appreciating Gidge too, who also posts at the above site. Both of them take photos with amazing lighting, showing every part of an outfit in a fluid way. Thanks to you two for setting a high standard!

More appreciation goes to Ana Lutetia (Website here!) for being not just the most amazing new release blogger out there (with impeccable styling and photography), but for being GEEKY about it as well -- and by this I mean that she shares her process, both the glitches and the successes and the workarounds, generously sharing her experiences and expertise as she negotiates our gaming platform.

Even more appreciation goes to Gogolita (Website here!). She's lovely at what she does, which is running a sim, as well as the excellent iheartsl website, a perfect way for new and growing bloggers to find their way onto the Fashion Planet feed. This service, as well as her beautifully lit skin reviews, make her a blogger worth following.

People whose legs I'd like to hump:

And more appreciation goes to the fracking awesome blogging team at Strange Pixels, but then again they know I love them. Why? Innovative outfits and settings, beautiful styling, perfectly dark senses of humor. Can I hump your legs? I'm going to stick my Broke and Notorius woman Terry Toland into the cadre of leg-humpees. I also shamelessly thieve her style. Thank you. More drooling and leg-humping goes to SLaundry's Elusyve Jewell, arguably the most beautiful blogger in Second Life (okay, I can't choose between Elusyve and Strawberry). Damn. I'm adding Phire and Sakuradawn at Malicious Style to the must-hump list, because of their cuteness, attention to detail, beautiful photography, and range of eclectic style. Finishing off this list (for the moment) is Brandy Rasmuson, who is humpable because she's super-gorgeous with adorable taste in clothing that ranges from elegant to cute. Now I'm tired from all that leg-humping...

MORE APPRECIATION to Lawless McBride (of Half Arsed) for commenting on my blog before I knew he was a nice guy with awesome taste instead of a weird stalker (just kidding of course). His only flaw is that he doesn't post enough for his fangirls. Get your ass out of that silly RL and come feed our need, Lawless. =) (Just kidding, I sincerely hope that RL is going well for you right about now.) And speaking of boys, appreciation to the warmest vampire on earth for organizing all kinds of fun stuff for Rezzables as well as relief funds... He's unstoppable when he's got his mind set on something, and I admire that even more than the pretty vampire in pretty outfits.

Allegory Malaprop:

And I'll end this installment of appreciation with Allegory Malaprop's TWO BLOGS. I loooooooooooooved reading her travelogue posts about Starlust and environs, and hope she's not done with that project yet, because it's addictive to get the inner scoop on how sims are formed. These are in her personal blog in which she muses about Second Life. She's also got a store blog in which she posts pretty fashion. True to form, the woman doesn't know how to make just one of anything.

Keep on being awesome, bloggers, and thank you for being so nice to me yesterday while I was working through my thoughts, everyone -- and I'm sure I'll post this and immediately facepalm because I forgot someone.

Odile and Odette

Whenever I see a gorgeous dress in two contrasting colors I rustle up my comrade-in-arms Mourna and put together something like this (you can see our other contrasting-color posts here). This outfit is from Bare Rose, and you get both of these dresses and the necklace and chest-snowflake for 140L, which is roughtly 75 cents USD or something. (Although I often like to pretend that Lindens have nothing to do with real money, especially when staring at pretty treehouses). Here, enjoy some pretty Mourna.

I've been thinking hard about this blogger appreciation thing, because something about it doesn't sit quite right with me. Not that it isn't a great idea -- it's lovely, and all the people who have taken part are very nice to do it. It doesn't sit right with me because I'm a little troubled about the position that bloggers have in relation to the Second Life fashion industry.

I've ranted drunkenly to a few poor sods about this already, but I feel as if bloggers are the only press that the fashion industry has, and if we really are the only fashion press (outside of the magazines), then I suspect that I'm not taking the job seriously enough. I asked myself these questions:

*) When's the last time I blogged an outfit that was from a shop I'd never been to before?

*) When's the last time I very politely talked to a designer about potential outfit flaws before writing about it, including use of different layers or wacky prim parts? And then, if the designer doesn't think about the changes, did I politely inform the public about these flaws?

*) How much time do I spend researching trends and responding to what readers/consumers want, instead of what I want to wear?

Answers: recent-ish, not so recently, never.

That's because I really love blogging, but I'm not a fashion journalist. Before we get sidetracked into the raison d'etre of blogging, let me clearly state my point: I'm not sure that bloggers should be so appreciated by the fashion designers of Second Life, because as their only press outlet, we kind of suck as press. However, we're GREAT at being diarists, self-focused documenters of our own style. We also have zero quality control -- nobody edits our posts except for ourselves, and nobody pushes us to get better at what we do.

This works for our genre, we do a good job of writing about our own journeys through Second Life. Should designers really settle for this kind of writing as the best representation of their shops? Should readers settle for journalism that is nice instead of fair? I know that I, for one, would rather poop rainbows than rake a designer over the coals, and that's not the point of this post. I worry that my blogging isn't giving readers the kind of fair and accurate reporting that a real fashion journalist would give. (I mean, I only write about what I love, but surely readers would appreciate more than that.)

I can actually think of a few blogs that I'd go to for a solid "review" of an outfit. I tender my appreciation to these, especially Dakota Lubitsch for never flinching when writing about the negative points of an outfit (not something I would want to do myself, or would ever do in my blog). Again, I think that blogger appreciation is a fine idea, but I ask designers -- are we really enough for you? What about those of you who, for one reason or another, get no press at all?

I mean no kind of wank here, I simply wanted to talk about the issues that came up in my own head when I thought about being appreciated. Love to you all, especially those that appreciate bloggers.

Featuring Arcavim by Drack Diesel

Arcavin 550

I appreciate myself too :D

Heh. After eight hours driving from Orlando back to Athens, my brain is fried like an egg on Arizona asphalt in August. There are only so many games of I Spy one can play... although I must admit the Sunday New York Times saved me. I paid the five dalla at the roadside Starbucks (which have replaced our McDonald's pee stops) and enjoyed the hell out of some real news. Did you know that nobody likes the current pope? Apparently he needs to do the saintly wave thing more often, instead of skulking around like Emperor Palpatine.

I'm wearing a new t-shirt from Gritty Kitty. It reads, "Look at the fucking hipster," and it's self-referential, I'd imagine. I'm also wearing new boots from Fade Dana, and I think I wanna take a page from my child and let my avatar wear them to bed tonight. Mmmmm, stompy boots.

And now I'd like to pause and throw a question out about Blogger Appreciation. Erm. People give me awesome free stuff in Second Life, and then I play with Photoshop. ....This is a fun hobby, but I'm not sure how this is 'work' that needs 'appreciation.' I love you all, but you're all completely balmy. ♥ (and *runs from angry pitchfork wielding hoards!*)
