Boi Ach by Schadenfreude

[Research bit]

Semiotics of designers? I noticed today while decking out boi-Ach (almost) entirely in Schadenfreude that designers have an internal vision of what people should look like. This is obvious, I guess, but not so obvious as when you're able to put together an entire avatar in a shop. Allegory's male looks perfectly made up, but in a fantastical way. Her Sennyo elf skin is bedecked with doodles and a wash of color...while the lines of Schadenfreude clothing are severe, the color always adds a splash of the whimsical. I've added Ach touches to this outfit (colorful /artilleri/ tattoos, Japanese hair, soft canvas shoes from Akeyo, bone jewelry from Studio Sidhe), but if I'd wanted to, boi-Ach could've gone with the Schadenfreude mohawk, jewelry and buckle boots for a complete Allegory look. It's kind of neat to be able to make a whole person in one shop, if you think about it...

[End research]

Schadenfreude is eminently wearable. I was thinking about this today while I put on a few of the many layers of shirt. The designs are plain enough to put with/under/in anything, but interesting enough to add a hint of personality. Safety-pinned front flap of the Lurking shirt is FTW.

You are invited to Hethr Engel's Baby Shower - Sunday 2/22 (tomorrow) 7 PM SLT - PinUps on the Retrology Sim!

-- DJ Jhurzen Ketsugo
-- Hethr, without a fake pregnancy belly! Come wish her well!
-- Dress code/theme: PINK AND BLUE. :p

Is RL that much different that SL? For tomorrow's baby shower for Hethr Engel of Closet Crisis, I'm on the hunt for pink and blue balloons, one for each of the poor girl's twins. Thus do our visions of reality invade Second Life; I'm assuming that even in SL, boys and girls should be represented by their stereotypical colors...

*grin* Do come party. Ketsy is DJing, and Hethr's taste in baby shower music is indie and alternative rather than cute. Go Hethr, making something like a baby shower COOL.

Boi Ach by Mourna

Mourna, queen of the super-hot kilt look, dressed me up today. She suggested a kilt and a vest with nothin' underneath, so I absolutely took her at her word. I think boy Ach looks like a Louisiana swamp goth straight out of Ann Rice here. Thanks for the suggestion, Mourna!

Late last night, up because of my daughter, Allegory and I stared at some poseballs that I was trying to make for my stone circle. Poseballs come in three parts -- the physical ball, the script that makes it do stuff, and the animation. I decided to use some AO animations, and Allegory provided a script that would make it work. For some reason, the script made my SL body leap into the air when I typed! This looked unnatural, so we spent a sleepy hour poking at it.

I contemplated what I was trying to do. I was trying to create realistic-looking ways to sit around my stone circle garden, ways that didn't break the laws of real-world physics. The stone circle is a cross between a public and a private space -- unlike houses, it doesn't keep people out by a facade or a roof. However, I find that I am protective of the space anyway. I want people to wander through, but not if they aren't respectful of the space I'm trying to build...

Perhaps there's a literacy of space and physics that I'm attempting to touch upon here. I want the space to 'read' in a certain way that invites people, but only if they choose to sit, walk, and think in a respectful way. To me, this means shadowy trees, realistic meditation poses, and a place to sit and contemplate the water. But I'm not sure that my 'writing' can get through. We'll see if it does!

[End research bit]

In other news, I have a larged winged thing sitting in my skybox right now, crying about the lack of good MMORPGs now that he's maxed out his levels in WoW.

You can sail the seven seas

Hiya. Welcome to five posts in which I flail around trying to look like a real boy (tm). This is in support of Winter Jefferson's plea for more boy stuff for the RFL Clothing Fair. I am (as everyone knows) a huge fan of yaoi as well as exploring one's inner Other, and I'd also love boi Ach to have a larger wardrobe. Today I dug through my inventory trying to find stuff that I haven't worn to death on this guy, and came up with something that reminds me of the Village People. Oh well...

[Research bit]

Yesterday, I sat with Subversive Writer and Nivaya and Kii on Nivaya's swing. We swung back and forth for a while chatting until suddenly I noticed that Subversive was glowing with red bits all over his torso and hips. "What's that?"

"My interactive parts!" Subversive said. Gleefully I began to click them, until I realized that they weren't turned on. Sadly I dragged myself home, only to encounter this message from Niv.

"He's got his bits set to quack like a duck if you click then," Niv chuckled, "and they're spamming us. Look." She pasted in a bunch of quacking.

After I was done laughing, this made me ponder the following: the one thing that Second Life doesn't really have is the sense of touch. We go through enormous efforts to pretend, though, setting up interactive components that at least make you feel like you're achieving something when you touch someone. My favorite is the /hug command... For a second, I feel like I'm snuggling someone for real! This reminds me of the many ways in which we're trying to extend the real into the virtual...

Fifth *kat* post in teal and orange

I had a strange in-world interaction yesterday. I went to my stone circle in Caledon last night, and found someone sitting there. He was a Caledonian gentleman, staring into space on one of my treestumps.

I greeted him and welcomed him to my garden. I also mentioned that the stone circle had just been completed by my pal Azazeal.

"Your stone circle? This land belongs to someone else," he corrected me.

"This is my land. I bought it last week."

He didn't seem to believe me and spent the rest of the time drifting off into IMs. He courteously apologized for ignoring me, but camped out on my land IMing until he logged off.

I wondered for a moment what his issue was, and then realized that perhaps I didn't look the part of a Caledonian land-owner. I was dressed in the purple kitsune outfit (below), and looked a bit scruffy. Had I put on a large prim skirt, perhaps he would've believed me capable of landscaping. As it is, I'm torn between being chuffed that he enjoyed my garden, and disappointed that he was vaguely rude. It does indicate that clothing and avatar appearance dictates social standing just as much as it does IRL...

Why did I write about this? I'm trying to document my interactions in this blog more lately, for the purposes of a conference study about language and avatar interaction in Second Life. That means that y'all are going to have to pick through for fashion stuff, but it'll be there.

For these last two outfits using *katat0nik's* stuff, I had two ideas in mind. I wanted to fight the inevitable cuteness with the orange outfit, and succumb totally with the teal outfit. I think I prefer succumbing -- I even used the tiny person shape that I made for kat's skin (available as a freebie at my writing shop on Axis Mundi).

katat0nik post 4: le neko violet

Yesterday was a long day in Second Life. My daughter was sick, so I found myself logging in quite often just to play dress up while watching interminable episodes of Scooby Doo with her. I worked on three dressup outfits... It struck me that part of knowing how to navigate Second Life includes knowing how to handle one's enormous inventory. To build an all-purple outfit with katat0nik's clothing, I used her handy standardized clothing names to search -- *katat0nik* (purple). Some designers are nice to the inventory and stick to standards, some don't so much, it's all a process of knowing how they think.

I had a brief funny moment with Ellantha yesterday evening. "Ella, I can't get *katat0nik* clothing to look slutty," I said. Ellantha said something to the effect that she was in a small *katat0nik* freebie skirt and thought she might be slutty, but when I went to inspect I found she was wrong. The genre of these clothing is firmly in cute land, although I am trying hard to twist it a little in these posts. The 'slut-it-up' bits are the sheer *katat0nik* shirt with the bra beneath, although...I think I still look cute.

Everybody go look at Mourna's glorious look from yesterday! After reading it, I hopped right over to the store that sold her skirt and ran into Willow and Lola. See what posting a beautiful picture can do? It can totally fill a store. :D

Also, Sasy Scarborough's Fashionable Relay Challenge has started; go see the posts so far!

Post 3 in katat0nik!

I've had a full day with a sick bebe and husband (oh and I'm sick too), so for fun I put together the green and red colors for my five-posts-in-katat0nik. I am ridiculously in love with the funny green Christmas tree hair from BettiePage Voyager, and have been trying to justify wearing it since Christmas. Sadly, I doubt it's still available, but it's a good taste of the whimsical hair in her shop.

My sekrit philosophy for these posts was to show kat's clothing in a way that I haven't before. In the red outfit, I was trying to make it relaxed, a little more everyday and a little less sweet lolita. It's set off with Dark Eden's new wristicuffs, incredibly pretty thorny roses. In the green outfit, I was simply tripping balls on Theraflu.

I take so few drugs, see, that I tend to get really weird when I take cold medicine. On top of that, I've watched about 20 episodes of Scooby Doo. The result is that I wanna read Fred/Shaggy slash. Luckily, I has the internets. (I make no promises for your own sanity if you click that link.) I'm going to woozily clean the toilet now for the next time my child vomits! And I'll let y'all get back to your (hopefully much more glamorous) lives.

Nature's first hue

Yesterday I spent very little time in Second Life. First Life kind of took over, with a full day of caring for my sick kid, teaching class, then driving to Atlanta for an invited talk at a friend's class. I got to talk to them about using Second Life to make machinima, and they seemed to dig it. They asked the usual questions about Second Life. "OMG, did you hear about the guy that divorced his wife because of a Second Life affair? Can you have sex in Second Life?"

I answered that like any creative space, you could use Second Life to do whatever you want -- have an affair, become a floating television, or create art. It's inevitable, though -- whenever I talk about Second Life, people instantly go to the sex place. Is it weird that I'm not compelled to use SL for sex at all?

I put on all the yellow that *katat0nik* has made today -- it's a surprisingly small amount! Pink and teal she's got in spades, but yellow you have to hunt for. My look is vaguely inspired by .hack/ -- more of a general girl-in-cloak feeling than any character in particular. Maybe I simply wanted to wear the staff.

*kat* series, post 1

Congrats to Winter for raising L643,477 for the Australian brush fire relief. I'm feeling sleepy and short of words this morning, so I'll let my picture talk for me. Due to her kindness for rescuing me from the auction block, I'm remixing outfits from *katat0nik* for the next five posts, and I thought I'd do it by color. I noticed while putting on various bits of her clothing that she's got a strawberry theme going -- the corset from Strawberry Cream goes nicely with the skirt from Strawberry Dream. Today's a teaching day, my child is sick, and I have an invited lecture tonight. Stress!

And the winning bid goes to...

LOL. Winter Jefferson, I admire you. Tonight's auction was proof that Aussies don't need fancy venues, clothing, working auction machines or even rezzed avatars to make something happen. Your pluck and indomitable spirit raised money for the bush fire victims anyway, and I got to see Truth Hawk's d***.

It is strange and exciting to be up on an auction block. I figured my going price would be around 500L, but I ended up making 20,000L for the cause, largely due to the generosity of a certain *cough* donor. Speaking of whom, welcome to five days of katat0nik. In return for her generosity to this cause, I'll be remixing her outfits for the next five days in this space.

Grady v.v I'm sorry I wasn't rich enough to win the bid. Next time!

Blogger for sale

from falln

This morning I woke up asking myself, how does one dress to get sold at an auction? No, I'm not suddenly a Gorean, I'm helping Winter out with his Date for Down Under. I admit that my biggest fear is standing up there and having someone bid about 5 Lindens for this blogger. v_v Fail. Maybe I should log in an alt and buy myself! At any rate, I went with the old adage that sex sells, which immediately brought to mind the dark and risque stuff from Falln, so I'm wearing a scanty outfit that would probably look nice on boi-Ach too. :D

Everyone show up and bid, okay? I have my eyes on Faery myself >3.
