Lovely Halloween things!

peter peter 01

Peter Peter pumpkin eater,
Had a wife but couldn't keep her.
He put her in a pumpkin shell,
And there he kept her very well.

(What a creepy little rhyme, eh?)

You guys are obnoxiously creative, so I've gotta keep posting about the cuteness. For example, this candycorn katty outfit from katat0nik's (un)lucky chair, the hat and pumpkin-with-poses that Long Awkward Pose gave out as a group gift (comes with ten poses!), the necklace from Violet Voltaire's lucky chair, and the special Halloween skin from SLink! Do I even need to mention the Halloween editions of the Lazy Places hya and synth boots? Not free, but there are some other Halloween gifts at Lazy Places... I'm in pumpkin heaven.

Sensuous adventures in pumpkin brains

It's been a bit of a crazy morning, but here I am with ~ First Flower ~ Witch-hazel II in White Frost (post four of the series), also wearing a gorgeous (free) dress from katat0nik. That neat pumpkin carving set is by Charming Poses, and I found myself sitting there for a long time with scoop in hand, vegging out on the state of pumpkin brains.

I love carving pumpkins. There's something about the squishy, seedy innards that makes me feel like a happy cannibal, all set to eat the raw brains of my victim. I especially like this feeling the weekend before another prospectus defense! Yep, round two. The first one was kind of a messy affair, the less said about it the better, especially on the internets. But Monday morning at 9 AM is my second one, and I trust that it'll go much more smoothly. I almost quit academia after the first one flopped -- but on the plus side, I like what I'm doing a lot more now!

I also like this outfit very much! I love the silvery sheen to everything, skin to hair to dress to boots -- I feel like a fallen angel in this outfit, someone newly plopped to earth, all set for sensuous adventures in pumpkin brains.

I has a bindi, see?

I dragged Hethr Engle over to Honey Kitty last night to find something that would look nice with this next pair of ~ First Flower ~ pastel boots, the Witch-hazel II in pink blush. The shoes are a lovely misty shade of pink, and I crossed my eyes trying to match it exactly, when Hethr said: Go darker to bring out the lighter color! She is a color Jedi, and I am but her padawan learner.

Wait, that might require a rat tail. Nevermind.

Today was a strange day. I spent half of it doing errands with my child, who said some strange things: "Mama, Uncle Sean is pretty because I like him. Uncle Jake isn't pretty, but Arthur [his dog] is pretty." Interesting. "Pretty" is her linguistic measure for how much she likes a person, I guess!

Aside from that, I also saw the movie The Duchess, and ... although it was a fine, decent, engrossing, credible movie, it gave me a few things to think about like why is it that women who enjoy sex must never go unpunished? and Hey, I've read about the Duchess of Devonshire, and she wasn't as lily-white and sympathetic as a Hollywood movie has to paint her. Ah well. Despite glossing lightly over her amazing gambling debts and torrid affair(s), the movie was decent, and I wasn't disappointed by young Knightly.

I do hope to see some 1750s-era clothing out on the feeds soon - !

Hm, I have rambled. This dress is from Honey Kitty, and brings out the blush in these beautiful blush boots. The dark bits of the outfit are from one of my favorite ~silentsparrow~ outfits, Beloved Lolita in Violet. The skin is lovely, eh? It's one of the new ones from SLink (credits below).

I had riches all too great to count

When I was a little girl, I read Joan Aiken's series about Dido Twite. The second book of the series was Black Hearts in Battersea, a story about an alternate-universe England where King James III rules instead of the Hanovers. One of the charming parts of the book was reading about the street scenes and color of England at the turn of the 1700s. Just beginning to industrialize, there were still puppet shows on the busy streets of London, and the most popular was Punch and Judy. Punch is a mischievous wastrel who is constantly in trouble with his wife Judy, and in the grand old tradition of comic theater uses a stick to beat everybody up whenever he's upset.

He also sings this lovely song, which becomes ironic coming out of his mouth:

I dreamed I dwelt in marble halls
With vassals and serfs at my side,
And of all who assembled within those walls
That I was the hope and the pride.

I had riches all too great to count
And a high ancestral name.
But I also dreamed which pleased me most
That you loved me still the same.

Here I am wearing a ~silentsparrow~ frock coat suited to the 1700s, and pastel boots from First Flower (post two) that match perfectly, wandering the marbled halls of Duskwood. Which is why all of this was on my mind...

The wind began to hitch

Witchy Vi

You thought these posts were over, but no! Violet Voltaire joins us tonight as a pretty witch girl in my every-so-often Halloween costume series.

"When I was a little girl," Violet said, "my mom would always get annoyed because I wanted to be pretty for Halloween." She's all grown up and STILL pretty, an innocent wandering the wicked castle of Oz, protected by her purple gown.

Come out, come out wherever you are
And meet the young lady who fell from a star
She fell from the sky, she fell very far
And Kansas she says is the name of the star.

So Violet -- are you a good witch, or a bad witch?

~First Flower~ has come out with Witch-Hazel II boots in gorgeous soft pastel colors. (Read more about them over here). I love the Witch-Hazel II series to begin with. They're sleek and shiny and buckled, and in dark colors look downright wicked! The soft colors make the danger of these boots seem cute, right up until you kick someone in the shin...

I'm wearing them with a new Fleur skin, the Allure Ivory Audacious. I like how the color over the eye accentuates my vaguely pan-Asian features, and how the lip is perfectly pink and full. I want to poke it with my finger! On the screen!

So yes, this is the start of five posts about these boots -- more for my sake than anyone else's, simply because I don't think I'll be able to take 'em off!

In the style of Hethr Engle

O hai. I'm in ur style, stealin' it. I decided that it would be fun to look over the posts on the fashion planet feed, find someone's outfit that I thought was particularly inspiring, and then TOTALLY NINJA IT using items that are already in my inventory. I think I'll call this series (not that it'll be consecutive, just whenever it strikes me) "In the style of ___."

Today's is inspired by Hethr Engle's post over here. Key elements I pulled from her outfit were: mini skirt with nice heels, a plain white shirt over a scarf, a shrug, and a headband. I went blond with bangs to match Hethr's look, but instead of a skin with dark eyes and pale lips, I went for one of the new SLink Bijou skins with a slightly darker lip and light eye. This was totally fun :D. Watch out, you could totally be next.

Blue Bloodless

Ghanima Uriza of Blue Blood creates at a mad pace, and she's grown in her art and skill since we first talked half a year ago. "I'm going to focus on non-traditional skins," Ghanima said about this one. "I hope it doesn't make you puke!"

It doesn't, in fact, I like the turn that her skins have taken. This one is especially lush, as though someone particularly rich and corrupt traded her life for an eternity of youth -- only she has a small tendency to spoil. She probably douses herself in scent to keep from smelling rotten!

The outfit and eyes are also from Blue Blood. I like the neatness of the prims and Ghanima's trademark decoration around the hem. The eyes have little skulls on them!

It's here, I'll be with you

This is the last outfit in my five outfit series about Falln. It's been lovely to wear and write about these clothes. In a way, putting on clothes is like costuming my avatar to be and feel a certain way, and when I'm in one designer's clothes for five days in a row (with small breaks to fish), it's like I'm walking around in part of the designer's mind.

Actually, that must be how sim builders feel when they create a land, and then see other people walk around in the corporeal manifestations of their imagination. It must be a bit like playing god, which...I what we do in SL. We make our own water and land, birds and beasts and trees, and then we populate it. No wonder people like Second Life, eh? It's a tiny place where we can touch upon the joy of creation.

...Back to clothing, right? This outfit neatly spans the aesthetic that I saw in the first few I wore, combining gothic elements and Asian ones to create a half-silk, half-vinyl lolita kimono. There's a cute option as well as a dead sexy option, and the look is exotic enough that I had to don my drow skin and horns for it. Who have I been in these clothes? I...actually had aural synesthesia for these outfits. I kept smelling sandalwood and jasmine, as if I were sitting in my Khuntah's Buddha nook in Thailand, basking in the peace of his daily meditation. Maybe these clothes spoke to my own divided self, halfway between east and west.

***Outfit: Falln Misaki Kimono -- fourteen pieces including three skirt options, kimono sleeves, a corset, fishnets, and stacked zoris.

I'll bleed like the reed

When I was a young Second Life Miss in Caledon, I was always struck by this conundrum: I had gorgeous little boots from Lassitude and Ennui, but nobody could see them because they were trapped beneath folds and folds of prim fabric! I used to walk around barefoot, because why bother?

The Caelia frock from Falln (post four) neatly solves that dilemma. It's got a saucy version of the prim skirt with a front panel cut out of it, for the purpose of showing off your shoes! Okay, perhaps that's not the real reason for the panel, but it's my reason for wearing it. The outfit is set off by Falln's boots (they remind me quite a bit of Fluevogs) and jewelry from Little Boy Blue. I really love the merskeleton necklace -- it's cheeky and macabre and delicate. The Caelia comes with many options, some shown here, and I note that the slightly gaping corset really suits Schadenfreude's Elsa skin. Isn't this skin neat? I'd never thought of surgical incisions as sexy before, but they really do add a certain Frankensteiniean glamor to the paleness of the skin. By rights I should have milky dead eyes to go with it,, perhaps for Halloween.

Today's post is brought to you by the song Super Trooper. My daughter had me play it seven times in a row while driving her to school.

A barren river wide

Sari about that

One of the most beautiful women on earth has to be Aishwarya Rai. I think part of her beauty lies in the contrast between her dark hair, honey-colored skin and surprising grey-blue eyes. I don't know her racial background (whether it's entirely Indian or not), but I seem to recall from my time growing up in Hawaii that the loveliest people come from a mix of different races. Egyptians, for example, have golden eyes and tawny skin, perhaps due to the country's location between Africa and the Middle East; and other half-Asians that I know have delicate bones and big eyes, like anime drawings. (Not me, sadly. I look far more white than asian.)

I was thinking about the intersection between east and west when I put on this sari and gothic skin. The DEN-DOU skin comes with a set of gloriously golden eyes; they are startling next to the paleness of the skin, and I love the combination. The sari's colors are just perfect for autumn-loving me, and it comes with henna tattoos and shoes.

Now I'm going to go stare at more Aishwarya.

hyasynth for Halloween

Guest-star hyasynth Tiramisu

hyasynth dressed in three costumes for Halloween. Have you ever read anything by Charles deLint? Her looks remind me of magical realism -- the intermixing of the human and faerie worlds in a way that produces something new. She's human at first glance, but when you look closer and closer you realize that there's something fey about her. Could it be the hooves, neatly encased in boots? The delicate point of the ear? The wings that might not be just for show?

Second Life is the perfect land for magical realism. Most of the physics are like RL, except for the vast capacity to create and become anything you wish... A good thing to remember for Halloween!
