Too sexy for my shirt

The new Halloween limited edition skins from [][]Trap[][] were so pretty that I had to drag out boi-Ach and wear 'em. Then, I was presented with a dilemma. How does one properly outfit a boy avatar to show off a skin like this? ...Speedos? Nah. Tiny shorts? Too Village People. Baggy shorts? Too shapeless. The solution was borrowing a pair of jeans from girl-Ach's wardrobe, the lovely ripped-up ones from The Closet. I can't tell you how many times I've worn these jeans, and it's good to know that they look nice on a boy as well.

The rest of me is care of Selos Dae's skin. Talk about navel gazing. You'll be gazing at your navel and every other part of your body when you put this on! I think it'll be my low-prim outfit for boi and girl Ach for busy Halloween parties. The skin comes in a variety of colors (like ice, green, grey, white, blood...) and patterns, with lip-makeup and non-lip-makeup versions. I think Malicious Style will be reviewing the chick version of these skins soon!

Kitty! Broom!

Nimbus Rau's kitty avatars from Metamorphosis are incredibly cool. Also incredibly cool are the new flying brooms that Sky Hye made for Metamorphosis to suit the kitty avatars. She's also made versions for less four-legged people too!

Seeing things like kittens on brooms reminds me of a poem that is apropos for Autumn and Halloween...

Ride a wild horse
with purple wings
Striped yellow and black
except his head
which must be red.

Ride a wild horse
against the sky -
hold tight to his wings

before you die
whatever else
you leave undone
ride a wild horse
into the sun.

Like the winter in July

This morning my daughter got us up at 7AM by turning on the bright overhead light in the bedroom. "Augh, shi--er. Darn," I swore, throwing my arm over my eyes. I know that when I was a child, I'd get up and see my hard working mother already bustling about the kitchen. Why am I not this kind of mom?! What is it about me, or perhaps my generation, that has more in common with teenagers than with adults? Actually, I'm sure other members of my generation are far more responsible than me. I'm a student; I'm a night-owl...I'm kind of the opposite of Bettie Crocker.

What makes someone an adult, anyway? I still love: comics, sleeping in, fantasy novels, slacking off, and candy. On the plus side, I pay bills on time and make sure my child has a relatively stable atmosphere, even if it does involve a ton of anime.

I guess we all have our talents. I think my own talent with my daughter is exploring with her. We have the best time hopping into my car and heading for parts unknown...for example, I really loved taking her to a huge fantasy convention to see all of the princesses and aliens. I guess that even though she's gotta wake mama up every morning, I still give her interesting experiences.

...O wait. This is about Falln! Post two of my series on Falln is about the James suit. I love the colors of the suit, and really like the brilliance of the embroidery on the shirt and sleeves and jacket. The entire ensemble (with the exception of the hair and hair thing) are from Falln, even the boots. I feel extra-elegant today!

Nekos in black leather

When I casually asked Pixie to send me a few photographs of herself in a witch outfit, I had no idea I'd be starting this incredibly fun series of women (and Dakota, whichever s/he is today) in Halloween garb. It's been grand, and I've been impressed daily by the creativity and thought that went into both the outfits and the photography. They photographed themselves in evocative ways, too, with nekos in coffins and axe-murderers in quiet little towns, dancers against melancholy backdrops, and Hethr's usual interestingly photographed background all decked out with spiders. This is to give us a greater feel for the ambiance of the month -- because clothing in SL isn't just an outfit, honestly, it's where you wear it and the story that surrounds it.

Dakota is no exception, and has photographed in Dakota's usual style with perfect attention to lighting and displaying the whole outfit clearly. Such a good blogger Dakota is! (Notice how I'm avoiding pronouns.) Dakota says:

I've put a Halloweeen outfit together. I couldn't find anything vampiric in my outfit so I've decided to go for some kind of demonic cyber neko kitty look. I realized that it's definitely harder for me to dress up for Halloween because this is how I normally dress (sometimes anyway!) The first two pics were taken at the Magic of Oz sim.

And here's where I got my things from:
***Skin: Emil Pale Skin 01 - Redgrave
***Eyes: Vishia's Eyes (Orange) AraluteZ
***Hair: Sway Hair (Black) - Aitui
***Lashes: Vogue Lashes - Celestial Studios
***Tattoo: What is the Matrix - iNFLiCT
***Outfit: Stheno Boy - Bare Rose
***Boots: Men's Revolver Boots - Beckenbauer Productions
***Ears: Neko Ears Pierced - Eat Rice!

I'll fall with your knife

Hello and welcome to five posts about Falln! Falln is the creation of Azriel Demain, and I am happy to write about his works for the next few days (interspersed by other people's Halloween costumes). The outfits I'll wear are half ethnic and half gothic, which is a pretty decent summary of his collection. I've tried to stay true to this aesthetic by wearing ethnic-gothic styling, a gothic skin as opposed to a geisha one. I love the flowing lines and colors of the kimono and chose non-traditional hair to match, something brilliant against the pale skin.

Abranimations makes twelve kinds of geisha dances, and my avatar is engaged in one of them for these photos. The dances come with these free fans, and I found myself staring for a long time as the avatar danced for me, trying to see whether the fans and the flailing sleeves interfered with each other. They didn't, of course! Good job, Abranimations! Boneflower Designs' Kawaii Shape (jiang li) was perfect for the kimono. I'm a huge fan of her shapes -- the one I normally wear is the very pretty Sasha, but her no-mod hips are a little too wide for system skirts. The Kawaii Shape was the perfect skirt-wearing alternative.

I'm especially sleepy today because right before bed I realized that the first chapter of my dissertation is due next week. Eep! That kept me up fretting until two...and therefore my day is mush. In fact, the sensation is neatly summarized by this strip from PHD comics. I love and hate this web-comic; sometimes it hits home a little too hard.

Screams from Silent Hill!

Ellantha Larsson's Halloween ensemble warms my steampunk heart. Jack the Ripper, stand aside! Here comes Ellantha the Axer, and she knows how to use one! I think my favorite photo from this series is the RRRAAAAGE one, where her prim megane-Edwardian face is all screwed up in anger as she heads toward you, axe at the ready. It's the stuff of penny-dreadfuls, it is, and I wanna know what happens next!

I think what happens next is that her victim breaks and flees.

In front of the judge, after she's dismembered us thoroughly, she'll push up her glasses and peek out from above them and say, "I cannot tell a lie. The devil made me to it, and PMS." Then she'll become an international superstar, and Tilda Swinton will play her in the movie version -- Screams from Silent Hill.

Today's Halloween guest-star overachieved! Here's Allegory Malaprop in not one but three different dress-up outfits. I find the pirate one particularly sexxeh, but that's because I'm genetically pirate (just like my husband is genetically ninja).

Allegory says: Halloween is all about dressing up! I like having lots of costumes! Pirate Allegory photos were taken on the Indigo Rose in Carnivale, the other two in Octoberville.

Annihilating all that's made

Trick or treat!

I took some time off and woke up orange! Okay, not orange, but a welter of different rusty colors. Part of that time I spent sorting inventory, which is always a worthy pursuit, especially when my inventory is climbing up from it's low of 19k to *gulp* 26k due to October. I actually suspect that fully half of this comes from Schadenfreude's new skin folders, so at least it's all great stuff!

The candy corn backpack is one of the trick or treat prizes at LocoPoco island -- I was unable to get the key that unlocks the prize chest, sadly. I might have to go back and try again. The head scarf is warm, snuggly and new from Curious Kitties -- it's in keeping with my couch potato tendencies this morning. It's so chilly and damp outside that I kind of want to throw a blanket over me and do nothing but stare at my computer for the rest of the day! Sadly (or happily) that's not to be. Children are enormous organizing influences, and I've got to look like a human instead of a couch pillow before school is out.

Can you even see me amid all that October color? I'm totally in protective camouflage.

The Halloween posts haven't stopped! I have three more people to come, and I'm going to put together Allegory's post right now.

You are the pumpkin queeeeen

It's really neat how all of the different women I asked to dress themselves for Halloween have taken entirely unique approaches to the theme. They've also been very thorough, redesigning themselves from the skin to hair to nails for this occasion! Not least is Hethr Engle. Hethr is a sleek pumpkin vixen in this outfit, and I love the way she's snuck in her favorite color. Somehow the hot pink really suits the orange and black!

Hether is always well-put-together. She's the kind of person that I'd want at my well-heeled Halloween bash, someone who would truly enjoy the spread of canapes and paté, and then join you for a PBR on the roof when everybody else has gone home.

I teach tonight -- I'll be in Second Life, showing everyone Virtual MacBeth. More about that production tomorrow. I decided to be a bunny for the occasion, but accidentally dragged my entire Kani outfit onto myself. The result was cute, actually (see?). Of course, I probably don't want to explain to my students how bundeers are made...

Up next is either Allegory Malaprop or Ellantha Larsson, depending upon who gets me their information first!

Decrepit dolly

Brandy Rasmuson as the decrepit dolly

Brandy Rasmuson is the fourth victim in my series of girls-in-Halloween-wear. Should I use the word "girl" to refer to women? I'm not sure I should, eh? It seems endemic in fashion writing, however, as if the term has been reappropriated in female-heavy industries much like the term "queer" has been in gay society. Anyway, I digress. Brandy is the fourth woman who is kind enough to photograph herself in Halloween-wear, and she says:

The look I keep going back to for just about anything related to Halloween has been this kind of gothy doll/ballerina one.

The look suits Brandy as well as the spirit of the holiday. Brandy has a well-worn Victorian dolly look, as if a little girl's high-wire carny doll had been left out in the rain for too long. Kind of makes you want to take her home and stick pins in her, eh? I notice that Brandy's outfit revolves around items from Black Swan - the ballerina frock from Shai, and the dolly key from Violet Voltaire. Much like I tend to cling to ~sparrow~ stuff, Brandy is known by her Exile hair, and it suits her well!

I've really been enjoying writing about other people. For one thing it moves my blog beyond the same things all the time, and for another it introduces me to awesome (new-to-me) shops. I might've shopped a bit while gathering people's slurls. *cough*

Up later tonight is Miss Hethr Engle, and she looks a treat!

She liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiives!

Featuring Nivaya Barbosa as FrankenNiv!

The third girl in my Halloween series is Nivaya Barbosa (see Pixie here and Elusyve here). Nivaya says: Pics are in no particular order but I like to think that she wanted to find a party after she escaped from the lab, and is happy at the end :D

I like this plot-line too! Nivaya is clearly dressing around her most excellent skin, which is a new release from Schadenfreude. It has anatomical cuts on it, which accentuates Niv's slender model form in the best macabre way. She's also sporting a tough hairstyle, clearly because the mad scientist that created her needed to fuse metal bits into the sides of her head. She ripped them out before going out dancing -!

Two items in Niv's outfit are no longer available, which makes me feel kind of good. Remember to keep neat stuff! Someday, you'll put it on and know that it's vintage and ultra-rare, like your favorite Last Call coat, or that armband with the slingshot and bottle of ketchup from that one defunct neko shop...

A beauty with braaaaaaaiiiiiiins

Elusyve Jewell models some fabulous Halloween wear

Last night I sat around sipping wine and fishing while Elusyve did all the hard work of being macabrely gorgeous for the blog. I kind of like this managing editor life! Set someone on a task and then goof wonder people get into management. *g* At any rate, here's Elusyve Jewell looking stunning despite the recent zombie attack that left her mauled and pustulent. I do like how the hair adds to the fresh-from-the-grave look, and how she picked an outfit that will definitely be on zombie must-have lists. One should never shuffle about the grid unfashionably unkempt, after all!

You'll be seeing a few more posts with other people in them this week while my avatar takes a wine-and-fishing break (the Halloween series started yesterday with the Witchy Pixie post). I love seeing other people's styles (and Elusyve is one of my favorite bloggers who never writes -- I think I need to turn this into an Elusyve-stalking blog and write about her instead), and I hope you'll enjoy the break from my own avatar's taste. (I know I will! Cheers to fish!)

Witchy Pixie

Pixie Tungl messaged me today saying -- "Have you seen the new Sorceress outfit at Bare Rose yet? You're gonna love it!" I asked Pixie to send over some photos, and here they are. I agree, she looks most excellent -- that hat alone is quite something, and the thing on the end of her wand looks like Chthulhu's internal organ. The skin is a Halloween freebie from Vanity Body, Pixie says, and she's right -- looks awesome with the outfit.

Shota Princess

Tomoyuki Batra of Little Boy Blue is the prettiest little girlish boy in SL (proof!). He's also a lovely designer, and just came out with a few new sets of jewelry right on time for the Jewelry Exposition. Here I'm wearing the Rachel choker and earrings (although you can't see the earrings -- I really need to invest in the jewelry pose set). I like the tribal edge to them; Tomo's aesthetic is tribal-goth, which is such a unique niche!

With it I'm wearing a melange of different items picked up over the past few days. ~momo~ continues to make hand-drawn delectable cuteness with her dot-tastic orange shrug, and if you haven't seen the autumn items from **DP**yumyum, you ought to. There are a number of things that I'll be scattering throughout my outfits in the next few weeks, including a soft squishy stole-thingie. Also notable is this cute frock from Forda at Haute Style & Co. I usually don't place her work in the cute category (more in the elegant category), but this one is aptly named Tween Queen. My brain is so weird. I attempted to remember the name of her outfit, and the brain spit out: Shota Princess. ...Wrong, brain, wrong.

Anyway. Yay October - !!

Looks 10, ARC 61

Low Prims R Me 02

Miriel announced that the Jewelry Expo is open (post here), and I spent a bit of time making a low-prim outfit folder (although Miriel mentioned that the expo is "one of SL's lowest lag" events, yay). Sakuradawn suggested hair by Ingenue, and I discovered that the Grable II updo is only 39 prims. The rest of my outfit is from Ingenue as well, because damn, what an elegant system look.

My total ARC ended up being 61 with the vintage pumps from Shiny Things. The shoes complete the outfit, but really, it's kind of cute to walk around in fishnet socks, and reduces my ARC to 21.

I got to see a few of the items that will be on sale and I'm EXCITED!

Lolita, dark and candy-esque

Sleepy Sunday

Poe Tatum of SRU strikes again with this fluffy Dark Candy Lolita dress. The frock has beautiful fabric (pan in on the designs in the lace!) and precisely constructed prim parts, making it a delight to wear. I put on the option that has a million bows, but all of the prims have bow-free options too! I'm wearing moar TESLA Hylda shoes, this time with a snakey print to the dark leather. Very proper, with just a hint of an edge from the buckles.

I'm kind of fried right now. This morning, our student housing power went OUT completely, and for some reason, falling off the grid messes with my brain. It could be that I suck hungrily from the teat of electricity like a little modernist tick; it could be that I needed a reminder of the ephemerality of the luxurious life we've got here in the US... or it could be that I need some coffee asap.

At any rate, I'm squatting at an internet cafe for my fix, hoping that the happy electricity dudes fix our power soon, or we'll have an entire fridge full of rotten red beans & rice and squash it is, two half-baked quiches are sitting forlornly (and soggily) on our kitchen counter. (Lest you think that *I* have these cooking skills, no, it's my chef husband.)

Okay. Back to sucking internets while I can!
