Hath thee in thrall

I met a lady in the meads
Full beautiful - a faery's child
her hair was long, her foot was light
and her eyes were wild

She took me to her elfin grot
and there she wept and sighed full sore
And there I shut her wild wild eyes
with kisses four.

And there she lulled me asleep
and there I dreamed Ah woe betide!
The latest dream I ever dreamt
on the cold hillside

I saw pale kings and princes too
Pale warriors, death pale were they all
They cried 'La Belle Dam Sans Merci
Hath thee in thrall!'
-- John Keats, La Belle Dam Sans Merci

Why do I have the Village People in my brain this morning?

Two days ago I turned in my prospectus, for the second time. The first time was an incredible fiasco -- one of my committee members quit during the defense, for reasons of her own. This time, not only have I rewritten it into something that is much more sensible (amazing how sensible life becomes when you toss postmodernism out the window), I also like it. I went to bed last night with a clear mind, and slept without any dreams ... Er, up until the child woke me up at 4 am, but anyway.

I took a peek into my "for blogging" folder this morning...and then swiftly closed it again. Oh dear. I'd best sort some inventory, eh? At any rate, I remembered this hair, one of Crimson and Clover's tamer models from Hair Fair. Although C + C did that amazing floating fetus hair, Rikka Koi clearly has a range of styles in mind when she creates. This is sleek and quiet and useful for any sort of temperament. Then, jewelry from Bliensen + MaiTai. This necklace has three sets of colorchanging gemstones and a resizing script...ahh, it's just adorable. Then there are Gritty Kitty's Hobbes gloves. If you recall, Sakuradawn Lei wrote about them a while back, and I had to get a set in orange. They match Pandabox !

I've been spending all of my extra time doodling around in photoshop making designs for tshirts. I dunno -- while I normally simply write, the urge struck me to design. It's probably because my brain wanted something completely different to do after all that writing... If any of them turn out well, I'll show you!

A city of anarchy

Remembering

“A tranquil city of good laws, fine architecture, and clean streets is like a classroom of obedient dullards, or a field of gelded bulls - whereas a city of anarchy is a city of promise.”
-- Mark Helprin

My parents got divorced when I was eleven. A few years later, when life had settled down and everyone had sorted themselves out, I went to visit my stepfather for the first time. I'd been living for a time in the small Hawaiian town of Hilo, not just tiny but surrounded by vast expanses of nothing in the form of water. From there, I hopped on a small airplane to get to the international airport in Honolulu. I remember thinking that the city looked impressively big compared to Hilo.

Then, I boarded the long, long flight across the ocean, and in San Francisco I pondered that although Honolulu had been big, this town was bigger still. Then, the flight across the country...

In the haze of an east-coast dawn, I had my first view of the skyline of New York city. It rose like a stark revelation, backlit by the sun. THIS is a CITY, I thought to myself, seeing the spire of the Empire State Building and the twin fingers of the World Trade Center pointing to the sky. I'd never seen a city quite like it, and to this day, I never have.

When the towers fell, my stepfather was working at his business two blocks away. He described the event as entirely surreal. There was a rain of paper, he said, like a tickertape parade -- but how could it be, so high in the sky? My mother was working at Unicef in Midtown. The story of how they each got back home that day is its own miracle, considering that my stepfather's train stop was the World Trade Center's. They survived to tell the tale of bravery and angst and confusion as New York lost a bit of its heart.

Today, I mourn the city that was, remember how blessed I am for the family that I didn't lose, and celebrate the city that still is. Somehow, New Yorkers are tough enough to soldier through. I think we've all grown, trying to comprehend how forces in the world (and we are not guiltless either) created such an atmosphere that this act of violence was possible.

Here's to this day, when America reflects upon our responsibility -- to ourselves, and to the world.

Curious Bootsies

Curious Bootsies

We come to the end of five-days-of-(Shiny Things)-Button Boots. Staring back at all the outfits, I definitely had a semi-theme; lolita frocks, every single one. This last lolita frock is from Curious Kitties, and it's accessorized with pumpkin-embellished ears and a tail from Passionate Neko Dreams. They've got a Halloween shop up right now, and it also has a wonderful neko pumpkin backpack that will undoubtedly pop up in a future post. I'm also wearing a celtic Neko collar by Studio Sidhe -- the designs are always very carefully made, and I know I'm in good hands when I don one of these pieces.

My thought for the day is: even though I typify the bored housewife that finds Second Life a compelling venue for play, it sure beats a playground with 90% humidity.

Button Boots and fellow wanderers

Willow Lleyellyn (in Zaara's new dress), myself, and Penrose Landar (in ~silentsparrow's~ dominion).
They are today's pretty people abducted for blog photo service.

*cough* so, I'm not sure what came over me earlier when I let my poor avatar's bare arse hang out all over the feed like that. We spoke, and she mentioned that I usually give her more than a thong to work with. However, since it was in the interest of showing off a lovely skin and outfit, she'll let it slide.

ANYWAY. Now I'm properly clothed again, and ready for boots post quatre. Today, the black (Shiny Things) Button Boots are accessorized by a fluffy mish-mash of katat0nik clothing. What's amazing is that all of her stuff color-coordinates, so that you can make your own katat0nik outfits easily! I'm also clutching her adorable Katty in Orange, and around me is swimming a Merkat.

Merkat. Do you fish? If you do, kat and 713 have a fishing pond at Axis Mundi with several varieties of Merkat in it now. Dear god it's adorable, and I attained fishing level five swiftly in pursuit of the orange one.

***Shoes: (Shiny Things) Button Boots in black

***Jewelry: Violet Voltaire My Violet Heart earrings, dolly key and necklace
***Outfit bits are all from *katat0nik*:

Houxin goin'? Okay, bad pun.

We interrupt my five-posts-about-Button Boots because I absolutely must write about a gorgeous, unique skin by Trap, and an equally sexy outfit made especially to complement the skin by Schadenfreude. Both of these designers drive me nuts -- no fair making so many cool varieties and outfit parts. Seriously, Schadenfreude's Houxin has TWENTY-FOUR pieces, which is why I went completely photo-mad on this post. Also, the skin varieties are so cool (with such interesting color combinations and skin tones) that I had to make an enormous photo and stick it on Flickr. (Look, Severina, you can click through to a bigger image! I did that just for you.)

Click for a closer look!

I'm so annoyed that I'm not showing all of the pieces for you. I guess I'll leave it up to the artistry of Analu and all of you other amazing bloggers to do justice to this outfit! The combinations are endless, with a bra/bandeau top/corset on many layers, capris/glitchpants/panties on many layers, and a skirt and two kinds of gloves and stockings and...oy. STOP, ALLE. Okay, I'm just kidding, don't!

The setting is a freebie by Arcadia Asylum. If you haven't been to the Hobo Railroad Infohud, you should go! If I wasn't completely claustrophobic in SL I'd live in this tiny free swamp shack. Instead, I prefer to live sans-roof. Why not pretend I'm outside instead of glued to a chair staring at a computer? Anyway, this outfit made me late for class prep. I wanna see how you guys wear this outfit! Send me photos!

Praying for Louisiana

Post #3 of (Shiny Things) button boots. I felt kind of monochromatic today, and since I'm not buying anything new for a while, I ferreted this lovely ivory lolita dress (Draconic Kiss's Usagi outfit) out of my inventory to match the shoes.

Forgive the following moment of bummer-ness, but I just found out that my husband's 85 year old grandma is without electricity after Louisiana's storm, for seven more weeks. I...fine, I have no words today for RL, so I think I'll use someone else's words.

...for the world, which seems
To lie before us like a land of dreams ...
Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light,
Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;
And we are here as on a darkling plain
Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,
Where ignorant armies clash by night.
-- from Arnold's Dover Beach

Hang in there, grandma, and the rest of you Louisiana folk.

Button Boots and bandanna day

[Edit: Did you know that you could spell bandanna with either one or two Ns? I thought I was going nuts for a second, but it looks like Merriam Webster doesn't mind either way.]

Happy bandanna day, everyone! I'm going to talk about this outfit for a moment, and then I'm going to share my own bandanna day story.

Today is my second post about Shiny Things Button Boots. I've been yearning to return to Steampunk ever since attending Dragon*Con, and decided that brown Victorian boots provided a perfect opportunity for it. What is Steampunk aesthetic? I learned that the official color is sepia (perhaps because it looks businesslike, slightly dirty, and matches copper?), so I dug through my inventory until I found an appropriately Victorian dolly skirt (~silentsparrow's~ Toxine in cocoa) and distressed top (Schadenfreude sepia revenant). I've written about both before, but figured that because this post is about the BOOTS, people would forgive me for sparing my new items budget this week :D.

The head gear isn't very Steampunk, but went so well with the bandanna that I had to put it on. Perhaps this clockwork dolly is an escapee from the Steampunk future, back in time to help Ada Byron along with her difference engine...

Speaking of bandannas, I'm wearing this bandanna today in honor of my husband's mother, who died just after Thanksgiving in 2006 of complications arising from lung cancer. I've never known a braver woman. When chemotherapy took away her hair, she bought a leather Harley Davidson vest and wore it with her Harley bandanna, proudly looking like a punk 60-something biker queen. Here's to the indomitable spirit of P! I know my daughter inherited that spirit, so it lives on.
