Two dresses from Floyd

Poses are from the Long Awkward Pose Spice set!

I am in a strange moment of peace before the semester starts. I know that it's a fragile peace (I'm sure it's because there are several things I haven't yet done that I've totally forgotten about) but for the moment it feels like a place of grace. The undergrads are gradually trickling back into town, and the air is smelling a little more like Autumn. Okay fine, we have August to get through, but a girl can dream, right? I love Autumn.

Anyway. Floyd, it sure is open! I'm wearing two dresses from shops with outlets on Floyd. The first is from Elate!, and the second is from Big Booty Big Money. I love the prim skirt on the Elate! Annalisa dress -- it flows like water around my legs. I find the BBBM Epilogue dress as entertaining as always; it looks like a 1950s film version of skirts from the 1850s -- just like slightly furled umbrellas. The designers have paid lovely attention to construction on both of these, and I feel all ready to dance at the Fall Cotillion.

Floyd also has a little freebie shack, well worth a visit. I got Schadenfreude's charm bracelet there, and several other items -- a bun hairstyle, paisley socks, a little fluffy skirt, etc. etc. The build is just as weirdly charming as Lloyd. I especially like the shop in the venus fly trap with enormous dead flies adorning the teeth of the plant!

A rose is a rose is a dress color

Lucky chair dress from ~silentsparrow~ and free skins from Heaven's Shapes

I am wearing a beautiful lucky chair dress from ~silentsparrow~. hyasynth is my friend as well as someone whose designs I love, so I generally wait for other people to write about her new releases before I step in (honor among bloggers, right?). But y'all are SLEEPY-ARSE today, so here I am. :D

I am also wearing three free skins that I discovered on my new favorite blog, Beanie loves Japan, and three not-free new hairstyles from BettiePage Voyager. The monocle isn't free either, but I got it from a new Japanese sim while stalking this post from Beanie about the B11 mall opening.

I don't think I need to rhapsodize over the Sylvan Suite in rose. It has a bevy of pieces and fabric so nice that I sekritly do obscene things to it. -- Just go camp the chair. Also, AVATARS WITH "A" NAMES, DON'T WE SUCK? I wish my RL name wasn't Achariya (hence my SL name). I wish it were like, Xamanaganaga or Jolyspius or Zlavania or something. My average camping time for chairs is completely obscene, and I end up glaring at all the other A people with the fire of competition in my eyes. Allegory, Azazeal, you two are going DOWN.

You might wonder why this post lacks erudition. It's because I'm horrifically sleepy! My child kept me up until 4, and then up again at 8. Anyway. How're you? I love you. Be my pillow. Oh wait, I've got stuff to do tonight!

***Dress: ~silentsparrow~ sylvan suite in rose, lucky chair dress
***Hair: BettiePage Voyager sunday morning in dark brown, girlie bob hair in gold, and twin tail baby in dark brown
***Eyethingie: Kemonomichi & Nala [K*M] snail eyepatch
***Skin: Heaven's Shape yuko make pop (A, B and C varieties, three come in a freebie box)

You say it's your Rez-day!

Happy rez day, hyasynth Tiramisu-pants!

Every day that I log onto Second Life, this artist and designer (who works entirely on Second Life without income from other work) reminds me of the lyrics to Aesop Rock's song No Regret:

Lucy was 87, upon her death bed
At the senior home, where she had previously checked in. ...
She'd never spoken once throughout the spanning of her life
Until the day she leaned forward, grinned and pulled the nurse aside
And she said:

'Look, I've never had a dream in my life
Because a dream is what you wanna do, but still haven't pursued
I knew what I wanted and did it till it was done
So i've been the dream that I wanted to be since day one!'

I feel lucky that I know someone who is living out their dreams instead of dreaming them. I hope I have the balls to do the same someday.

I dreamed I dwelt in marbled halls

I have a small fascination with Maxfield Parrish. Sure, his art looks like bright poster kitsch (and many were), but his brilliant wash of colors and fantastic dreamscapes have been in my imagination since I was young. My favorite image of his is this one, possibly because of the peace of the scene. I can't tell you the number of times I've wanted to be that man, sipping his morning coffee, staring off the parapet of his castle at the village below.

[Which leads me to a small digression. I wonder sometimes what life would be like if I were a tall burly man with excellent health, instead of a petite woman with an immune system far too prone to stress. I think I'd like it. Also, I could reach tall shelves.]

The reason why I'm thinking about Maxfield Parrish is because the photo that I took above (taken on DuEl) reminds me of the color and composition of his work. The brilliant flowers and fey avatar especially remind me of his stuff, although my garments should really be grecian robes instead of the rainboots and knickers. Ah well, at least they're excellent rainboots (from Algernon) and knickers (from Royal Blue).

Jung would have a field day

Funny little story.

Eshi Otawara made a black swan dress for Rezzables. Lokum Shilova gave it to me this morning to review, and I put it on. It was lovely, a froth of black tutu and boa descending over a feathered bodice. Just my thing! Shortly thereafter, while hopping around on Flickr, I came across the One Hour Sim Project in Desperado. The photos looked gorgeous, so I went for a visit.

The sim was amazing. You appear inside of a fragrant bouquet of lotuses. The lotuses form a space sculpture, and more spinning blossoms inside invite meditation and peace...

"Hey," chuckled a woman standing near me as I marveled at the loveliness, "you look nice in my dress." It was Eshi Otawara herself. It turns out that she was behind not only the gorgeous dress, but the build too. Sometimes, the synchronicity in Second Life is scary...

The Black Swan event is tempting and will make me broke. This is why I've only written about this dress so far. Darn those prices, I'd buy every one of those dark lovely frocks and suits if I could.

The ride of the pink and fluffy valkyrie

This gown, Ivalde's Dis gown, came with a story. The notecard explained that the Dis are Odin's shieldwomen, also known as the Valkyrie. They ride with Odin and determine the outcome of battles. I like this contradictory sensibility -- the dress is enormously pink and fluffy, and yet it is named after the grim harbingers of woe and defeat.

I like this outfit because it speaks to my own internal struggle to maintain gender equity for my daughter even while she insists upon growing up to be Cheerleader Barbie. It's difficult for me to say, "Okay, there's nothing wrong with wanting to be fluffy or pink, dear, but you also must kick ass while doing so."

Luckily, the kid adores Kim Possible.

I realize that I've been using this Second Life clothing blog to hash out my own issues with reality/motherhood/life. Clothing is seriously the focus, really. It's just that clothing covers up our human souls, and those normally shine through into our outfits. Like here -- why am I in a mohawk and a pink dress? Once again it's that struggle -- how can I mitigate a love of the feminine with the understanding that women must kick ass? In this case, I figured that despite their fluffy frocks, the Valkyrie probably would've really dug punk.

The strawberry backpack of doom is the fault of Sakuradawn Lei and her strawberry post (read it here!).

You are the dancing queen

You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life
See that girl, watch that scene, dig in the dancing queen

I watched Mamma Mia a few days ago, and I have to admit that I cried through the whole damned thing. Why? It hit me hard in the mid-life crisis place. My biggest philosophical ponder while watching the movie was, what does having the time of your life mean to me? It means remembering what it was like to be in my 20s without any responsibilities...and I was reasonably irresponsible! Why just go out dancing on Friday when Wednesday had plenty of free time? I recall that I danced a lot, back then (embarrassingly enough I even competed in a low-level ballroom competition, winning first place in rhumba :D ).

The tears came from the place inside that's been restraining all that, shoving the desire to dance my way through life somewhere else so that I can attend to other things, like school and the kid and the nuts and bolts of being a ... I think the movie made me yearn for that feeling of freedom again.

On the other hand, I don't know if I can do without responsibility now. There's a different kind of joy that comes from being awake for someone at 4 am. It's a cranky joy, but boy does it make you feel necessary.

I think that's why us 30-something moms play SL. It's a way to regain our 20s. We have no responsibilities in SL, and our joints don't ache after a hard night of dancing. Today's outfit is more Flashdance than Dancing Queen, but the spirit is there. I think Bowie put it best:

Let's dance for fear
your grace should fall
Let's dance for fear tonight is all

Wind me up

Allegory Malaprop and I, playing the outfit game

Are you interested in the mechanical, the diabolical, the invention of idle human hands? Coppelia was a dancing doll, so life-like that she gained suitors. Doctor Copelius invented her, wound her up, made her dance for his pleasure. She had all the trappings of life except for a soul...

Charles Babbage saw ballets about mechanical dolls and was inspired to attempt it himself, make a machine that could simulate the decision-making process of the human brain, the difference engine.

So here we are playing Second Life on computers, the long-distant ancestor of Babbage's machine. We're pulling the strings of our own mechanical dollies and making them dance -- but instead of lifeless eyes, we've imbued them with our own soul. Sure, Second Life seems pointless sometimes, but what we've done is extend the spark of creation beyond human constraints and into the realm of imagination...

Ready to don a tutu and dance to the tune of our own invention?

Look at my awesome eyes!

Nice day for a...

Today is my marriage's sixth birthday, and I've been with Dave for eight years. That's a fair chunk of my life -- from 27 to 35. He's seen me grow from a relative kid into a mom, and that's an enormous change. I'm not one to extoll the benefits of motherhood (what? Less SL time?), but I have to say that having a kid made me see how lovely Dave can be. He's a great dad, and seeing him play with Alba has to be one of the great joys of my marriage.

Anyway. *cough* So that you don't gag, let's move on to the clothes. I'm wearing something blue, something black, and something wedding by Rebel Hope. My own wedding was a tiny elopement in the back yard of our townhouse. The justice of the peace had hair growing out of a mole on his nose, and we had tequila shots before we said our vows (needed the liquid courage for this marriage!). I think I've had a hankering for a big fluffy wedding dress ever since. Luckily I can indulge every whim in this virtual world!

We're about to go out for a celebratory brunch. Hell, we outlasted Brad and Jenn. That's gotta be worth celebrating.
