Other people are stylish

Michelle Cusack

This morning with my child on my lap I read the Fashion World of SL and got excited about three things -- the Toxine lucky chair suit (beautifully written about by Ashia Tomsen over here) from ~silentsparrow~, the sculpty sunglasses lucky chair gift from Tesla, and the group gift sandals from ::69::.

I went to ~silentsparrow~ first and waited for a letter change, but gave up sadly after a little while. Poor avatar! I should've made one with a name starting in "Q" or "X". Then I went to Tesla and was similarly stymied by "H" and "P". While I was there, however, I ran into the lovely Michelle Cusack. "Hey, I have that hair! And that dress looks like it's from The Closet."

Michelle nodded. "Skin is a Tuli group gift, hair is from Shop Seu, lace-up sandals from Kumamoto Japan. Have you seen the hair from ::69:: yet? It's really gorgeous."

I loved Michelle's Japanese designer aesthetic and talked her into letting me photograph her look. Then I hopped immediately over to ::69::.

Himiko Lowey

I hunted through group notices and got ::69::'s group gift sandals, and then went upstairs to stare at the hair. I ran into another lovely woman, Himiko Lowey, in attendance by a kneeling slaveboy. Nice accessory, eh? Her look was entirely different, sleek and softly glowing in a shirt from Armidi and pants from SLink (the bottom on those pants are perfect!). She was trying on the new hair from ::69::, and I must say that it suits her perfectly.

That was my morning -- no photos from me, I'm nervously standing around in my outfit for today's Faces of the Darklands competition, hoping that I don't stumble over my hooves or fall off the stage. Good luck, finalists! I'm looking forward to the show.

The entire mad teaparty is on my head

Okay, this outfit from NONKO has a HAT. I had to take off said hat to show the rest of the outfit, because once it's on that's where all the attention goes. I like the playful creativity of this outfit -- it's got a unique photo-sourced touch with the fabric that I wasn't sure I liked at first, but the images on the fabric and hat make you pause and stare. This is true of other stuff by NONKO -- especially this kimono that I wore the other day with photographs of women wearing kimono on the collar fabric. Clever, that. Cleverness always gets me.

I'm also wearing the rest of the free items that I got from Curious Kitties yesterday. I'm in the eye bandages (always useful! You never know when a stray drow might impale you in the eye with his copper-spiked elbow guards), the little black wings, and the bracelets. The wings are each a prim attachment, which allows you to change the angle at will -- neato.

Ahh, it's the weekend, and tomorrow I'm walking in the Faces of the Darklands competition/fashion show. My first competition! It's been an interesting experience for this mousy mom and grad student to have my avatar chosen as a finalist. "So this is what it feels like to be all pretty," I pondered. I wish luck to all the finalists, although my own vote lies with Elusyve, because she's such a badass. <3

More bark

Free tree hair from Curious Kitties!

Yah. I'm posting again because I went and got Curious Kitties' new free tree hair. It reminds me of the dubious poetry of my fellow Rutgers graduate, Joyce Kilmer:

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Why this poem is famous is beyond me, but damn does it stick in the head.

Miss Sakuradawn, I could swear you had a post in this cool Dalmation skin and ears and I can't find it now to credit you! Edit: here's her post! She reviews these skins so nicely!

At any rate, look at me, I'm an inu! (Inu means "dog" in Japanese, so it's kinda the equivalent to "neko".) Here's hoping that MiaSnow will start an Inu revolution in Second Life with this skin, ears and tail -- surely not everyone wants to be a catgirl!

My lucky inu is also wearing a cute new tutu from (Elate!), the Phoebe dress, written about over here. I like the texture on the feathers, and...fine, it's a little weird for a dog to walk around in feathers, but at least she's not wearing a Dalmation fur coat, right?

I totally wrote about the boots a while ago, during the ::69:: sale, but here they are again because they really suit this black and white doggy. The necklace is de rigueur for the pet set, the fishbone collar from Lazy Places. Hush, yes, it should be a dog bone -- I simply don't own enough inu stuff yet!

Lady Edwina in aqua; in blue

I saw Miss Mui Mukerji's post about this particular Nicky Ree suit and had to see if I could give it my own demonic twist. The inspiration for a demon-in-Ree comes from the Drive By Trucker's song Demonic Possession, one of my favorites of theirs that's been in my mind lately...

The suit is so decadent I could see John Malcovitch in it, you know? With a fake beauty mark, hanging off of a railing at Versaille, pondering how many of the lovely ladies he could talk into selling him their souls (or at least bodies)...

There are many ways to wear this (outfit stats are listed below), but I think my favorite is with the vest only and the capri pants. It reminds me of the pond scene with Mr. Darcy when he ungirds himself so that his shirtsleeves are hanging out. "Oh! Naked wrists!" Or no, wait, that scene from Angels and Insects where the naturalist spots the elegant veins of the governess and suddenly realizes that she's got a hidden wild side.

I think it's the fabric that makes this suit wild -- the vivid combination of colors, the cut, the tailoring. It's clear that Nicky's imagination was flying when she made it, tripping on some dream of Versaille. I'm glad we can all join her there.

I had to go aqua for this suit! With aqua shoes and aqua hair and aqua skin. What? Over the top? Okaaaay, I resemble that remark.

Love's Neko Lost

I was in a neko mood this morning, partly because of Gritty Kitty's new hair. hyasynth put it on for me yesterday and I was instantly in love, not least because the scarf has a color changing hud! I love items of clothing with this kind of flexibility. It's hard not to stand around for an hour clicking and changing and clicking and...Okay, perhaps I'm a bit obsessive. Along with the kitty theme are ears from Kalico Kreations (I'm a cheeseball and am still wearing the free ears from their NexCore fashion show) and outfit from Curious Kitties. Being a neko necessitates strapping stuff to your body, so I put on this armband thingie that I got as a Discord group gift. You might notice that my outfits are a mix of free and bought stuff; this is because I actually operate on a grad student budget. Plus, free things are great quality too!

Also notable is my new necklace. Violet Voltaire put out a set of jewelry called No Love Lost (read about it on her website here), and it continues her fascination with hearts. You'll see this motif throughout her work (like in my other favorite of her necklaces, the My Violent Heart set). Her work is amazing because the fluffy cuteness of hearts are always mitigated by an edge of saucy punk.

The Crux of the matter

Malluch Cleaver is an awesome name for an incredibly creative designer. Malluch is the brain behind this fellow-er-person-no-wait-thing, the Crux. It's got a curly tail, it's got flopsy ears, it's got claws and fangs, it's got an adorable shape that swaggers around looking like a B-boy from looney tunes. It also has a new version that was just released.

Malluch. So sue me, some names remind me of art. Your name caused me to go hunting...after I discovered that Malluch means "ruler" in Hebrew, I realized that what was hovering on the edge of my mind was Ginsberg's Howl:

Moloch! Moloch! Robot apartments! invisible suburbs!
skeleton treasuries! blind capitals! demonic
industries! spectral nations! invincible mad
houses! ... monstrous bombs!

(Go read Howl here)

The Crux also looks good in fluffy pink and Swallowtail's pretty new necklace.

~silentsparrow~ sale!

Quen Morrisey in ~silentsparrow's~ Elegia

Today is the second to last day of the ~silentsparrow~ sale -- it ends tomorrow, 6/24, at midnight SLT. In honor of the event I managed to lure out the shy Quen Morrisey, whom hyasynth took on to write posts for the ~sparrow~ blog. She's very polite and elegant and TALL and totally lives for ~silentsparrow~ clothes! The sale is in the main room of the store as well as the hidden sewer section; go to both to see the half-priced clothing.

Quen apologized for being a bad model. "My hair tends to eat my clothing," she said, "But I can't really change it." Quen said that her glasses also define her, to the extent that she only notices them if she accidentally takes them off.

"I think that what makes the older ~silentsparrow~ designs have staying power is the depth of the fabric design and the painstakingness of their construction," Quen pondered. "Even designs that hyasynth made a year ago stand up today, undoubtedly due to these qualities."

I'm wearing much smaller hair than Quen -- I've been into dark brown lately, and this braided ponytail from BettiePage Voyager had me drooling the moment I saw it. I seriously wish that I'd inherited this kind of hair from my Asian side instead of this kinky curly mess that I have IRL!

My brain has knots

I wore this yesterday. It reminds me a little of the beautiful color scheme that MichaMi made famous, with her soft golden hair and splashes of color. I miss her blogging presence, but I understand she's crossed the line from 'writer' to 'creator', and that's excellent. I felt like a tomboy today, so I used LAP's male poses to express myself.

My brain isn't working! Therefore, it's time for some Emily Dickinson.

And so of larger – Darknesses –
Those Evenings of the Brain –
When not a Moon disclose a Sign –
Or Star – come out – within –

The Bravest – grope a little –
And sometimes hit a Tree
Directly in the Forehead –
But as they learn to see –

Either the Darkness alters –
Or something in the Sight
Adjusts itself to Midnight –
And Life steps almost straight.
