Fangirl squee

Know what I'm doing while wearing this outfit? I'm watching a live streaming conference at the Princeton University sim, in a replica of their church auditorium. Who's talking? My idol, Henry Jenkins. He's talking LIVE and is being streamed into Second Life, and I can't believe how cool this is. (Catch a previously recorded version of his talk here.)

Why am I squeeing? Because Second Life just made geography irrelevant to me, shooting me like a transporter beam virtually to Princeton. If that isn't something squee-worthy, I'm not sure what is.

He's talking about how the web is creating learning communities of children who are teaching each other all kinds of stuff online -- like how to dance (Souljah Boy), how to create, how to speak other languages. "How can we harness this excitement and enthusiasm for the classroom?"

Dood, that's exactly what I wanna know.

It's important to look pretty when attending highly intellectual events, and I'm happy that I had this outfit on when I got the call. Ellantha introduced me to Minajunk skins (damn her, now I'm short 2k L), and the rest of my outfit is from *UnTone Quilt*. The clothing from this shop is lovely; great textures and shapes, and I feel so incredibly relaxed in this dress that it makes thinking easy.

"The whole world provides a series of inspirations to create," says Jenkins. True, true. Especially you SL designers :D. Case in point, my Shiny Things Skyliners even have small buildings on them!

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's...a suit

Guest-babe is Ellantha Larsson

Today sucked. A whole, whole lot. It's right up there with my husband's mommy's death in my list of "do not want." There's a good reason for it, but not one I'll go into in a public blog.

That having been said, I logged into Second Life only to encounter my homey hyasynth about to release a new outfit! This perked me up enormously, doubly so when I saw what it was.

"Damn, hy, there are gears and cogs on that."

"Yep -- and look, I made it in cocoa."

Then, I dug out my airship, dragged Ellantha over by the tails of her suit, and photographed myself in a fine steampunk outfit. Don't we look awesome? Sometimes, looking awesome can make up for all sorts of shit.

Have I mentioned yet that I took myself to see the Sex and the City movie? I thought it was well worth seeing, especially because of the following message:

Do not plan a huge wedding, for you will inevitably staple a bird to your head and get rejected by your groom.

Instructive! Also, when you are old, make sure your swimwear is (1) expensive and (b) covers up your flab -- which is an amazing life lesson that I quite take to heart. Those girls all get A+ for allowing so much of their aging flesh to show onscreen anyhow. Yes, show the world that 50 is sexy! That gives 35-year-olds like myself another good 15 years of bikinis. Okay, tankinis. Okay, one-pieces.

Other important lessons that I gained from the SATC movie were:

-- Make lots of money
-- Spend it all on clothing.

At least in Second Life I have that last point down pat!

Synchronous symbiotic cyber-ites

I'm loving symbiosis this week. Designers create stuff not only to support their lives and SL habits, but also to make people joyous. I understand just a little of that feeling -- I made a small lame t-shirt once (it said MILF, and it was in honor of mother's day), but when I saw it on someone I felt a strange glow of pride in my gut. "Damn. She's wearing my creation!"

I rarely get this feeling in SL, but designers must get a huge buzz out of it every time they see someone in their wares. This is why I love poking around the shops of new designers and wearing their stuff, much like the jewelry I wore by Bliensen+MaiTai a week ago.

The lovely Dot Lane wearing her new jewelry, outside of Bliensen+MaiTai

In response to my post, and to Dot Lane's, Plurabelle Laszlo wrote this cute little note on Fashcon:

Dedicated to Achariya Maktoum and Dot Lane - for the first two reviews I ever got - you both made me blush :)

My own buzz comes from wearing totally cute stuff, of course. Dot and I got together to squee over being thanked (see, SL fashion bloggers are fans first and journalistas second), and we took a few pictures of the awesome jewelry. You're gonna be seeing this post in stereo because Miss Dot will be posting about it too (Over here, in fact!).

Dot also teased me about being a drow in gingham. Hey, you never know when you need to infiltrate an early American farm and steal some apple pie!

Mmm, skullicious

None shall pass!

I have a demon hunter's bag. It's from ++ChaCla++, and it makes me feel like Buffy the (Elven) Vampire Slayer. She's off hunting cute vampires. She'll threaten them with her rusty stakes, and then force them into immoral situations for her own perverse pleasure. *cough*

(Anyone else a fan of Angel/Spike fic? Not that you'd admit? Fine...)

I also have a great adventurer's jacket from WEBER. It looks as though Indiana Jones wore it around the block a few times, which is never a bad thing in an item of clothing. My elf sorely bemoans the lack of an Indie hat, but fedoras and flopsy ears don't play together very well...

Anyway, back to stalking vampires and their slash fanfiction!

Achariya cuff!

I'm feeling very bashful about this post. See -- one day I was chatting with katat0nik and said, know what I'd love to wear? A wrist cuff that is strappy like your boots, with a bunch of buckles on it. Maybe something colorful to match your dresses!

katat0nik, being the sweet woman that she is, made them. Not only that, they are somehow called the Achariya Cuff. I blush with non-false modesty here; as if I did any of the hard work of creating these!

Cuffs: *katat0nik* Achariya Cuff!

They've exceeded my little clothing fantasy by having a color-changing hud that changes each of the straps individually as well as the leather of the cuff. The box comes with two cuffs and the hud, and I'm proud that my name is on it. Thanks, Miss katat0nik! I'm not worthy!

"I hope you don't mind severed arms," katat0nik said cheerfully.

"Oh, of course not!" I mean, how else should cuffs be displayed, really?

Also, she's got an adorable dollarbie skirt with butterfly detailing new in her shop. Here it is modeled by Adair DeCuir of SL Free*Style:

Monarch in the dew

Today is skin day! I posted about katat0nik's skins earlier, and now I'm writing about Gala's. Several women that I admire like Gala's skins so much that they actually stalk the poor woman (just kidding), so I began to stalk her too! She handed me an enormous folder of demos, so I picked the palest and the most orange to wear. The eyes are the focus of the skin, wouldn't you say? Despite that, the lips are drawn in such a lush, soft manner that my eyes are drawn to them as well.

The rest of the outfit is stuff that's been sitting in my "for blogging" folder for a long time. I picked up the jumpsuit at the PixelDolls sale, and the desert scarf so totally used to be a new release from Canimal, but isn't any more, tee hee. Ah well!

My daughter got completely worn out by her grandparents this morning and is actually flopping around the floor watching Blue's Clues -- tired for a change -- which gave me time to write this post. Grandparents are strange, magical people with enormous patience for their grandchildren. I wish I had that patience!

Oracular skins

It's Tuesday. I defend my dissertation proposal (meaning research plan) on Friday. This means that I'm in a strange mood, which makes for going blond!

Things on my mind this morning include:
  • Why has my father brought in a jar full of grubs? I understand that he is an entomologist and wants my daughter to love insects, but truly, they're a little gross on my kitchen counter.
  • Trailmix makes for an excellent breakfast, especially the chocolate M&M bits.
  • I don't want to leave the internet and read books of theory for several hours. When can I get my cybernetic implant that allows me access to the internets ALL THE TIME?
  • These socks are very macabre. They're a group gift from Schadenfreude, and they have little skeletal toes! I think I'll wear them in honor of my favorite holiday, Halloween.

Also, I'm wearing a number of adorable skins by katat0nik, in her incarnation as Skins of Delphi. You can choose bright lips or light lips, and the eye makeup has lovely dark eyeliner bits that look like what I used to wear to dance at Atlanta's Masquerade. Ah for being young and able to pull off pvc. I threw mine out when I became a mom. The rationale was this: I don't want to be the woman whose child has to say, yep, that's my mom in the plastic pants.

Carrot in a cart

Dear Gogolita,

Be careful of getting knocked up in Second Life! You don't know what lurks behind those perfectly normal boy avatar exteriors -- heck, the thing behind the avatar might not even be humanoid! (Not that I'd ever name any names for the father of this little guy!) I even hear it's possible to spawn baby unicorns.

In other news, FLUKY is soon to release a new, adorable skin that is reminiscent (in a very good way) of Bronwyn's Another Fundraiser skin. This one is called Deathly, and I absolutely love what she does with the li'l cupid bow lips. The rest of the outfit is also from FLUKY, because I couldn't resist this when I was in her shop.

*Frown* Now how do I make this baby carrot stop crying? Oh, I click it's face. Useful; yet another improvement over real life!
