Goin' on vacation!

I'm off on vacation, sort of! My sister-in-law is getting married, and I'm actually not going to take my computer when I travel to Los Angeles tomorrow.

I'm not sure how I'll survive (given the extent of my addiction), but what with being the Mom of the Flower Girl and all I'll be pretty busy.

In honor of vacation, here's my take on gothic beachwear. It's been a kind of tiny running joke in my blog thus far -- what would a pallid-skinned avatar such as myself wear for a day in the sun? The answer -- no boots (gasp), sunscreen, sunglasses to hide computer-weakened eyes, and a very very big umbrella.

I'll see you all on May 5th! Have a good few days. Will y'all miss my constant blather? :D

Was it something I said or something I did

hyasynth is gonna kill me for the cheek of this post. That which we adore, we tease, right? The second I saw the name of the new ~silentsparrow~ suit, Thorn, a certain Poison song came to mind. With a twist, darnit -- there's an excellent cover of Every rose has its thorn done by the rockabilly band Rex Hobart and the Misery Boys. It rocks, country style, and the lyrics are poetic:

Every rose has its thorn,
Just like every night has its dawn.
And every cowboy sings a sad, sad song...

In honor of the song I went and found the biggest 80s hair that I could, and now I feel a bit like a purple german shepherd. Good thing my eyes are pointless (much like a cave-dwelling insect. Why do I know this? I spent much of my childhood hunting them with my father, who is an entomologist).

I love this suit. I love the belt (Allegory gave hyasynth a lesson in tinyprims, apparently, and wow - can't wait to see what hy does in the future), and the brocaded collar and jacket fastenings make me pan in and stare. There are three other colors to this suit that I might have to purchase right now, a black-on-black version, red, and sea. It comes with 12 pieces, including bits that I haven't shown you guys at all, like the gorgeously belted shirt.

In which I laugh at myself: I've had a sekrit blog-crush on Dakota of Fashion Junkie for a while now, so when she asked if she could photograph with me I jumped at the chance. She posted the results in her blog, and boy-Ach looks exactly like the lecherous roue he is. Yes, it's true, I have a certain love for yaoi. Beware of letting your bois into my clutches! I will pose them like miscreant Ken-dolls! *grin* -- In any event, I had fun with the innocent little elf.

Peacock hats

Tonight, Allegory lured me to her location with promises of seeing a big black elephant. It was not just big and black, it was painted in Alle's trademark Schadenfreude swirls, and reminded me of nothing more than the elephant from Moulin Rouge. This was probably intentional, because the new build that Alle's been working on resembles a run-down theme park, as if Safari World had taken a long, long vacation.

I found a few neat things in this new sim. First, a brace of straying Thimbles designers, one of whom cheerfully offered me a chapeau. It's got a beautiful shape, and goes perfectly with -Hiccup's Nerd swept hair. I'm in a brown/rust/orange mood again (is it October yet?).

The other thing that I found was a stand of sunflowers! These are next to a human-dwelling-sized flower pot. I stared at the pot with a sudden hankering to actually make something in SL just so that I could sell it in that pot.

My entire outfit reminds me of my youth. I grew up in Hawaii and remembered little Japanese lady tourists trying to hike down to Akaka Falls wearing straw pumps and tidy little hats of this exact shape. Since I grew up in the 80s, I also remember the incredible size of snapshot cameras. If it wasn't larger than your purse, then you were no sort of photographer. SL, the perfect nostalgia machine.

Guest star: Dove Swanson

The first time I met Dove Swanson of Long Awkward Pose, she was in her panties making poses. Somehow this impression of Dove remained, so when I went to snap photos of her for my sixteenth guest-star post, I said, "I figure you should be in panties in hilarious poses!"

Dove, being the generous woman that she is, complied. I think she looks dashing in that mohawk and those yellow bits and pieces, especially with her head between her legs.

"Why'd you decide to make poses?" I asked while she bent over and mooned me.

"MONEY!" Dove replied, "Okay just kidding. I was a photographer in SL once upon a time - and something that was always a factor was poses. I always wanted more, and different ones, and constantly thought 'Gee, I wish this pose was a little different' and that's kind of what provoked me. I mean, honestly, a ton of pose makers in SL are or were photographers at some point - it's just a natural progression I think."

I asked where her inspiration comes from.

"Usually from magazines...I probably get 80% from there. From time to time if it's a theme I am working on, I can google for pictures. Kind of like 'geisha' or 'goober' ..:D"

Dove Swanson in the signature long awkward pose

Dove gravitates towards designers with clean lines and flawless construction.

"I guess I always perk up when the big-names drop a load. Like Armidi. Even though I normally only end up buying one or two things. But I would say I also gravitate to the smaller, niche shops ...amerie's NAUGHTY would be one that comes to mind immediately."

I snickered.

"I just said drop a load? LOL." Dove laughed. "Feel free to edit that!"

"No wai. I'm totally using that."

Dove listens to her home stream when she creates, Radioparadise. She's a sucker for folk and indie music, with her current favorite musician being Deb Talan of The Weepies. I went poking at Deb Talan's lyrics for a way into Dove's head, and I found this. It's a fitting description of Dove's humbleness and enormous sense of humor:

I am humbled in this city
There seems to be an endless sea of people like us
Wakeful dreamers, I pass them on the sunlit streets
In our rooms filled with laughter
We make hope from every small disaster

Fullmetal Achariya

Have you been to Le Petit Prince yet? Siddean Munroe of SLink handed me a new jacket today with the color name gunmetal and my mind immediately went to Le Petit Prince (thanks for showing it to me, hy and Noam!). Gunmetal? Don't you mean fullmetal, as in Fullmetal Alchemist?

I'm not sure that Siddean had steampunk cyborgs in mind when she made this coat, but my inner Caledonian fully appreciated the opportunity to let her cogs and gears hang out. Le Petit Prince has some lovely steampunk bodymods, including this arm and cog-brain monocle. I could stare at the walls of the shop for hours.

This coat has a lovely swing to it, and the design is impeccable as usual. I only had to tweak the prims a little to make up for my less-than-Amazonian frame. Siddean, you tall girl you.

Oops! I has a metal arm. O noes.

Catboi Ach says mrrrrow

New release:

This outfit is perfect for the inner catboi, don't you think? Another by DE Designs, it comes with some over-the-top shoulderpads that I'm not wearing at present. Look at all those straps and laces and buckles!

-- Whoa, I just noticed that I forgot to put on a tail! I fail as a catboi, clearly. Darn!

Notecards like the following make me sad but hopeful. Designers don't have to roll over and take it when people rip off their stuff!
(Notecard from Lazy Places:) It is with a heavy heart that we have to tell you that we have been the victims of Alleged content theft. Dmca is being filed and the Lindens have been notified. We had plans of releasing new products today, however due to this issue new releases have been put on hold. So what does this all mean for you our loyal customers?

I'm wearing her boots in this post over here, and they are awesome.

Free things:

There's an art walk at Axis Mundi! Once you're there, you can see the art, and then you can join the Axis Mundi group and get several lovely free items: two pairs of free Stomp Lightly boots, a large mushroom covered in eyeballs (oooh, so cool), and the rusty armbands that I'm wearing here. 713 is creative as hell, and the whole sim is worth a walkabout.

(*cough* My ears are also free from the NEX-Core fashion show stage, leftover from the Kalico Kreations show. If you're standing on the catwalk, they're to the right at the bulbous end of it, three little bags on a crate. I'm not sure if I should be posting about these or not, but they're lovely lovely ears and I'm proud to wear them. The ears also come with Mr. Sitting Box, also shown in the photos.)

Upskirts and shirts

I realized that I'd forgotten to show you the BACK of *katat0nik*'s new Ghostfire boots, and had to swiftly rectify the situation by *cough* buying another pair. Indeed, the tooling on the -- leather? vinyl? -- is lovely, totally worth an upskirt :D.

Did you know that hyasynth taught me about upskirting? "Be sure you wear bloomers," she cautioned. "Sometimes people pan around and try to look under your skirt."

"Why?" Asked n00b Ach blankly. "It's just, you know, pixels. And a very inexplicit skin."

Now I get it, it's the all about the allure of the forbidden. Peeking up someone's skirt unawares is kind of like walking through other people's land when they aren't there, or having a really slutty alt. Then again, it's part of SL, isn't it? Much like griefers, who remind us that we live in a magical land where anything's possible. Yeah -- I kinda like griefers, as long as they aren't boring or annoying.

Today's shirt is lovely, isn't it? I begged Doc for it as soon as I saw the ad on the feeds a few days ago. It's the DE Designs Tango shirt, and it comes in two other colors. Matches more of my Kyoot Army sales purchases. The flare of that skirt shows off the boots!
