Noon is so bright at Starlust

Did you know that the Starlust Motel is opening tonight? I came for a bit of a wander before the sim opens at 11 SLT (and slows me down so much I can't move).

It's fabulous. The worst thing about Second Life is the urban sprawl, and Starlust somehow takes this and turns it into art. What's the difference? I think it's purposeful urban sprawl with a sense of humor -- creators who could be doing something else have gotten together to make an intentionally dilapidated space complete with sex beds and peeling wallpaper.

I love decay. I haven't waxed lyrical in a long time, but let's pull out some poetry for this nasty green heap of a build, shall we?

Me only cruel immortality
Consumes; I wither slowly in thine arms.
Here at the quiet limit of the world,
A white-haired shadow roaming like a dream.
- Tennyson, Tithonus

The Starlust is the home of a number of cool shops, including Schadenfreude (Allegory's third!), Violet Voltaire, Thimbles' main store, Pudge, Ki2, and uh, other shops I have yet to poked my nose into.

Did I mention the sex beds? I do love those.

Oh yes, there are freebies from all of the shops for the opening. I'm wearing one of my favorites, a Violet Voltaire cameo that she named "OrAch." The name, isn't it suspicious-sounding? This is because I heckled the poor girl until she made me an orange-colored cameo. Thank you, Vi, it's totally gorgeous! (And I'm sorry for the late nights spamming your IM. Grin.)

You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll probably be able to rent rooms by the hour -- at the Starlust.

Paper Cut-ups

Ach and Lawless McBride being all manly

"You know what would be totally cool?" I said to Lawless McBride. "What would be cool is if we both dressed up in Paper Couture."

"Sure," Lawless said, because he's relaxed like that. You could probably stick the fellow in an enormous ball of yarn and he'd simply accessorize.

So we went and shopped at Paper Couture. My boy avatar felt a bit like Louis XIV today, so I went for powdered blue and ornate. Lawless, being the manly guy that he is, somehow turned the gypsy frock into something that resembles a Japanese Samurai hakama. Damn, Lawless. Where's your sword?

Don't answer that.

Anyway, here we are, joining the Paper Couture sheep, because men can totally wear couture too. See? (I totally lost our other outfit details. Argh. Oh well. What's important are the dresses!)

On my man Lawless:
***Hair: Armidi Hair - The Individual - Midnight I
***Necklace: M.R.M. Surf - Mixed Wood Metal Necklace
***Shoes: Redgrave - Boots Black Leather (sculpties)
***Pierces: Primitive Design - Insurrection Piercing Set
***Paper Couture - Silk Gypsy
***Bracelet watch: RICXs Fine Jewelry - Mens Spiked Bracelet Watch A102GT

Does this frock make my hips look big?

Who is that tall girl?

Shapes by Zada Goth Chic shape and "Bring me a Dream" skin

Zada Zenovka was kind enough to hand me her new "Goth Chic" character avatar. We chatted briefly about it one night.

"I love the character of Death from Sandman," Zada said, "so I'm going to make a complete skin and shape set in her honor."

Zada's Goth Chic character avatar pack is definitely complete. It has one base shape and then seven other iterations depending upon prim skirt or prim lashes, five varieties of Another Skin skin mods, prim lashes, three kinds of face lights (I'm wearing the gothique one), a few fun extras like Death's ankh, and eyes. The eyes are all dark and glittery and gorgeous, straight from the pages of Neil Gaiman.

Zada wrote something lyrical in the note within the character pack:

In Sandman, Death is a teen goth. She's full of youthful optimism and compassion, but also timeless wisdom. She knows that when the last lives in the universe dies, she'll be there to claim them, and yet she faces this knowledge with gentle humor. She's an incredibly compelling character to me, and I wanted to capture something of that in my own take on a sassy goth chick.

I do love it when creators have stories in mind when they create.

"Tears for the Dying", "Spider Queen"

Back in pink!

Look, free clothes from bossa nova.

Okay, I was hardly gone for twelve hours from SL, but it was a long, difficult twelve hours. The recharger chord for my MacBook broke, and I had to drive to the nearest Apple store with my toddler in tow to replace it.

Have you ever taken a three year old to a shop full of expensive electronic equipment?

I thought I'd emulate my RL look today, which is loosely based around the theme of O f***, gotta shower, dress, and pick up the kid in ten minutes before I drive an hour to the Mac store and...what's clean? My bright pink dress? Rock --. The SL equivalent is totally picking whatever's on the top layer of Inventory and dragging it directly over your avatar.

Anyway. The skin, glasses, dress, corsage and bangles are all freebies/dollarbies to add to today's authentic "graduate school mom" look.

***Hair: (creamshop) Plum Hair in brown

What's black and white and red all over?

50% off bossa nova dress from the store closing sale

Amazing how affordable it is for me to look like "me" today. I went for a wander in Honmoku yesterday and picked up this Dreamin'g Alice dress, below, for 90L. While I was wandering, I made the mistake of peeking on the fashion feeds, and saw that Bossa Nova was having a 50% off store closing sale. I picked up the lovely discontinued dress, above, for 125L.

Box with afro

Honmoku is a great sim for a wander. There are lots of places that made me stop and stare, like the culvert with the dead tree, the crow-pattered wrought iron fence, the comfortable chair-pig...and the box with the afro. I had to put on big hair in honor of the box with the afro. Edit: Aha, Dove Swanson enlightened me. This box is from Aqua Teen Hunger Force. *grin*

A pale shadow

Shadow Things Beauty Queen Crime Scene skin

It was late at night when I stumbled upon the shop. IRL, the moon was hovering in the center of my living room window, and the child was sound asleep. In Second Life, the sim was midnight, and I couldn't find Free for Fae anywhere. Had it moved? I didn't know. There was a red skin I was looking for, and I'd landed in a strange town with narrow streets and dark shops.

I wandered the town, casting my gaze from side to side, seeking. From the doorway of Shadow Things I saw a flash of white. What was it? I turned to look, and saw a child crouching on the wall, staring at me out of dark, sad eyes. I entered, compelled, fascinated...more children appeared, all staring down at me as if they could tell strange tales...if they could speak.

Struck by wonder, I slipped inside of their skins, and now I'm the one telling strange tales.

Leather and fur for Spring

In this outfit, I feel like a gothic glamazon. I think it's a combination of Calico's elegant Coronis hair and the Sayuri furry leather outfit -- and, okay, the ::69:: moccasins. I realized that my last few outfits have been built around grey/brown tones, and now I'm in mortal fear of Swirly descending upon me and beating me with her color stick. I'll wear color next post, Swirly, I promise!

Sayuri is a tiny Japanese shop that sells about ten outfits. This is one of them, and the prim skirt is so sassily untidy that I did my happy-distressed-skirt dance. I have one. It resembles the infamous "chicken dance."

I'm still on a ::69:: kick (I mean, who isn't? :D ), so these moccasins are from my shopping trip. The Coronis hair was made to match the ~silentsparrow~ Coronis suite (written about over here), and is a very elegant updo indeed. I could rule small cities with this updo, it's perfect for a coronet.

I'll stop blathering now, because I'm about to make another post entirely! Watch for it, it's about a photo contest!

(*Snicker* -- I just noticed that I'm totally only wearing one earring.)

Red red wine you make me feel so fine

Rosemary Galbraith of ROSEMAR

Rosemary Galbraith, my fourteenth guest star, was one of the first people to read my blog. She contacted me right away with a warm welcome and invited me up to hang out with her in her shop, back when it was called Oh! What a! and floated high in the sky.

I teleported in...and there Rosemary was, totally nekkid.

"I'm overdressed!" I exclaimed, and she laughed.

Even back then, Rosemary was carefully putting together a line of skins. "I've been working on skins for weeks," She explained. "I'm especially proud of the tush." She turned to show it off. Indeed, the bottom on her first version of the ROSEMAR skin was perfectly shaded!

That was my first experience with Rosemary. She's been as cheerful and mellow as a glass of merlot ever since, a creator without a trace of diva (except for her AO).

Then, Rosemary disappeared. Her store poofed, and she surfaced only to work. Months later, a notice came out that her new store on Popfuzz was finally open. Her months of hard work on skins has paid off, and her line is carefully made and unique and lush, just like the lady who made 'em.

I showed up to photograph Rosemary and noticed that she was a lovely shade of bronze with some outstanding hair. "Are you this shade in real life?"

"Hm, I'm Native American/Swedish/German type mix in RL, so a pasty yellowish hue," she laughed. "In SL, i do enjoy to be darker. And my hair addiction is growing now that I don't have to buy skins!"

***Skin: ROSEMAR espresso - makeup 19
***Dress: ROSEMAR beaded dress in blue with reworked prims
***Earrings: Turnstyle sand dollar earrings (not for sale at the moment)
