We don't need another hero

I'm teasing you so much with this picture! Where am I? I'm at the Second Mirage fashion show. They've debuted a new collection, but I can't show you any of the gorgeous pieces until after Sunday. I'm totally excited to wear everything, however, and the best part is that these pieces are also affordable.

In this picture, I'm wearing an outfit more suited for the Wastelands than a fashion show (DE Designs 1846 Blackened, blogged by the creator over here), and this was completely accidental. I'd put it on in my gypsy wagon earlier and was staring at it when the notice came to hop over to the show. Hilarious; I appeared and felt immediately chagrinned when Brit (the Second Mirage designer) appeared in front of me in a glorious Nicky Rees gown. I stood tall, however. The workmanship of this distressed suit is quality enough for any event -- and tough enough to survive a possible cyber apocalypse!

This outfit makes me feel like singing some Tina Turner:

What do we do with our lives?
We leave only a mark
Will our story shine like a light,
Or end in the dark?

[ If you haven't yet, go to the Another Fundraiser skin sale! -- I went and got um. Fine, about eight gorgeous skins, including one from Ingenue that will be tough to peel off my virtual body. Only 50L each, and the proceeds go to UNICEF. ]

Blond unlike me

I admit to you guys that I totally stalk Milla Michinaga. We're sort of opposites. She's a blond, I'm a (blackhead?). She's tall and elegant, I'm short and quirky. She's got her finger on the pulse of all kinds of fashion, whereas I tend to stare into the strange abyss within when I put together my outfits.

But whenever I look at Milla, I always think of this quote from Raymond Chandler:

"It was a blonde. A blonde to make a bishop kick a hole in a stained-glass window."

What intrinsic quality makes Milla a blond, and myself a brunette, when we both have all the options of SL open to us? I mean, why am I not sporting green hair, and Milla purple? The answer has to lie somewhere in the strange interplay of personality, RL and SL. But today, my outfit is inspired by Milla, mostly because these boots are tall and elegant like she is.

Also, news flash: ~silentsparrow~ is having an excellent sale on the third floor of the main shop. Go get stuff before the outfits are permanently retired!

Does that come with a sleigh?

If you're anything like me, you've been trying to figure out how to wear all your Last Call items without looking like, you know, you just stepped out of a Last Call sale. Luckily, Furs Against DSC has provided us with the answer! Nobody's going to ask where you got that excellent corset; they'll be too busy staring at your antlers!

Fab Free in SL posted about the free offer here. It truly is a huge, amazing packet of avatars, from foxes to reindeer and all in between, and it'll be tough getting me back into human form anytime soon.

One note about the clothing -- furries are not so much with the pants. Also, skirts that are too long do funky things with legs and prim attachments...and some prim skirts remove tails. Hair? No. Shoes? No. Necklaces? Sometimes. But you can bust out those short pants and dress up that torso to the hilt!

Avatar from Furs Against DSC, corset top from Last Call, bloomers from ~silentsparrow~, cherry blossom tattoo from Aituu Tattoos, cross necklace from Second Mirage. Sorry, have to scrimp on the credits today, must run to pick up the child from her grandpa.

Keats and Yeats are on your side

Miss Darkling Elytis

I met a lady in the meads,
Full beautiful - a faery's child,
Her hair was long, her foot was light,
And her eyes were wild.

I always think of Keats when I run into Miss Elytis. Today, while picking up hyasynth Tiramisu's new outfit (below), I ran into Darkling. We are bad for each other's pocket books. She's the one that whispered the name of a certain AO creator to me (I adore my AO), and also encouraged me to purchase a number of TESLA's ankle boots. I think we're good shopping companions because we stand around and gossip about naughty things while purchasing; we also share a taste in the dark and decadent.

Which describes both Darkling's outfit and my own. Darkling is wearing Unzipped's Victorian Steampunk ensemble and hair by BettiePage Voyager. I haven't been to Unzipped yet, but I obviously must (damn that bad influence Darkling), because it smells like my kind of store. I'm wearing ~silentsparrow's~ latest, "Dreaded Sunny Day", which reminds me of something Dorothy Vallens would wear in Blue Velvet.

The set has lots of parts, including some awesome lingerie and an incredibly adorable tutu, a steal for 400L. Six colors -- go see it all over here.

Imagination creates reality?

Hey look. This new Philotic Energy hair (Niela) is totally cute with the freebie skin from Imagen (blogged over here in SL Free*Style).

Beyond that, I finally got off my lazy teacher ass and started grading papers this morning while my SL avatar laughed at me and tried on pretty clothes.

I did notice something the other day. I realized that my SL avatar very definitely has black hair, just like me. All the hair colors in the world to choose from, and I default to black. So I began noticing the kinds of hair I wore, and realized that many of the cuts were kind of fluffy and short.

My avatar inspired me! Last week, I totally went to the hairdresser with a picture of my avatar in a short black haircut and said: MAKE IT SO. She did! IRL, I now have short hair that looks just like Philotic Energy's Billie.

A punk cotillion

I can imagine the conversation now:

"Hey mom," says the trust fund kid, back from her first semester at Reed. "I kinda got a new haircut. And um, this friend of mine, he wanted to practice inking so I totally got these guns on my chest. But can I still go to the Valentine's Day cotillion? I totally love the Dimsey-Houghton's chipotle foie gras."

The painted ponies go up and down

I'm staring at something dense and turgid for my RL work. In Second Life, I had the hardest time making this dress anything less than adorably light-hearted and cute. I'm supposed to be a gothic carnie, after all! Not a sexy 1950s version of Serena Williams! Despite that, I absolutely had to wear this perfect little skirt and shirt outfit from Ingenue, and therefore, I had to turn it dark or else. Ingenue, meet Kyoot Army.

Big-arse boots help with balancing on the tightrope, right? Right. Perfect prim skirts also help.

See the dress at the Ingenue blog over here, plus the other two new outfits. Creamy reviewed Ingenue's adorable V-day freebie here.

Glorious Things

This post is unabashedly about these shoes. They're Shiny Things' new Mary Geos, and they give me happy shoe feeling. Shuddup, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.

What is it about shoe shopping that feels so amazingly nice? IRL, my wide duck-feet fit the most plebian shoe sources ever, but in SL, my avatar has high arches and a delicately narrow little foot. I force the avatar to wear all kinds of desperately uncomfortable footwear. Then, once she's laced up into something tight and sweaty, I make the avatar dance. It's a good thing that if you get a blister, you can slimply change out your skin!

Anyway, all whimsy aside, these shoes rock. I want them for breakfast, on toast.

I sound my barbaric yawp

There's a certain rooftop in Second Life where I go to hang out when I really, really want to be alone. It's restful, and wide, and gives a lovely view, and -- last time I was there I actually ran into an acquaintance.

"Hey -- you're in my alone place!" Jonathan Sprawl said.

"Oh, I am sorry."

We had a small chat before I ceded the roof. I noticed that he'd entirely changed his look -- different body (much less buff, much more average), different skin, clothing that was more /artilleri/ than Savvy Avvy.

"What's up with that?" I asked.

Jonathan said that this look would probably stay, that it felt better somehow to look more natural than like a super-Ken doll. "I don't understand how, given the enormous range of options available in Second Life, people choose to look like plastic instead of something real."

I agree and disagree. I think that there's a place for plastic too (or at least latex), and that even Barbie has her own secret favorite look (I bet it's the lumberjack shirt). It's really all about choices, right?
