Alba calls them toe-toes

stripeddolly01

Edit: Looks like the site is no longer active.

I can't quite put my finger on why this Flickr group doesn't sit well with me, so I'm going to flail around for a moment to find words. A lot of people that I respect find it funny, but I think I've got to say what I feel about it in the interest of being true to myself. :p ...So, no offense intended to anyone, but...

I think it's this. People try very hard to be creative in Second Life. It's all a process, not a final destination. I know that if my first twenty or so blog posts had been pulled up for judgment on a site such as this (or hell, some of my posts now), I would never have found the heart to continue. In fact, it was difficult for me to post today because at the back of my mind was the fear that my photos would end up adorning the pages of this group.

This is a personal reaction -- sites that tear down and criticize other people's works of design or blogging don't encourage people to try harder, they simply make them want to stop trying. I joined the group to see when my own fashion faux-pas would end up there. How sad is that? I know that this group won't go away, and I know that a lot of people don't mind it, but I'm going to try my best to pretend it doesn't exist now. Moving on.

In happier news, katat0nik released her adorable striped dollie dress today, and I'm wearing it with another new release from J's, the RealToe Short Boots. RealToe, you say?! Why yes, if you click the toe, options appear for an open-toed boot with neatly polished toenails! You can match the skin-tone on the toe, and there are several polish colors. Such a cool idea...

Thanks for saying exactly what I wanted to say about that Flickr stream. :)

Thanks indeed. It's just plain nasty--reminds me of bullying. What is fun about tearing others down? In fact many philosophers believe you damage yourself as much as you hurt the target.

I pretty much had the same reaction to that flickr feed, except I didn't join. I just ask some people who did to let me know when my stuff is on there.

I'm a pretty critical person, but there is a big difference between me telling a friend that I think her ads look like velvet Elvis paintings, and me posting a picture of her ads on my blog telling anyone who cares to read it that I think her ads look like velvet Elvis paintings and maybe she might read it someday.

Who hasn't looked at an avatar in game and IMed a friend with a clever comment like "If a transexual and Gamera (the giant turtle monster) got fused together in a failed time travel experiment, it'd be that lady." But I'm not going to go up to someone and say "Do you know who Gamera is? well I think that you look like..."

Bringing it to a public forum beyond an IM is more like bullying, and intentionally mean since you don't give a crap if you hurt the person's feelings. :/
That's not my thing. I kinda get it if someone else is into that in the same why that I get that my cat likes to vomit on my white dress shirts. I know it will happen. I know she must enjoy doing it since it happens frequently, but for the life of me I don't know why the hell she has to do it.

Thank you for posting that. I did comment on that feed even though I was afraid to at first. There were a lot of people I know connected with it (as contacts) and people I knew commenting and it really upset me they would have something to do with the kind of humiliation that was going on there. I do my best every day to help new designers and encourage people to get better and learn more so it was so disheartening to see that. I'm so glad there are others who felt the same way, I was beginning to feel pretty alone in my thinking. I'd love to pull out some of their old designs and put those up for public teasing to give them an idea of how it feels to someone who is doing their best. It reminded me of those girls in high school who used to point fingers and laugh at the kids who's parents couldnt afford nicer clothes or cars. Broke my heart seriously and I would never contribute to that, ever. Those that did should be ashamed.

Ach I had the same fear! I kept checking to make sure my posts weren't on there.

I am glad they are gone, it can be so discouraging for something like that to happen.

Maybe people don't realize how hard it is to put yourself out there in any capacity and that most of us are terrified. Even after almost 2 years I already halfway feel like I should stop blogging everytime people complain about "vanity blogs".

Also, I see you found the Nomine skins :D I was in the process of making mental note of where all the apples were for you, until I saw this post! <3

*grin* Thanks to Ashia, yes. And again, ILU and everyone else who found it funny.

Different opinions are fine in my book <3

Thanks, I agree that the Flickr site was malicious and cruel. I did not join or make them contacts. I have no interest in seeing what they do.

I am troubled by the growing use on anonymity for malicious personal attacks. Whether it's on SL Secrets or on Flickr, it's cowardly and craven behavior.

While that Flickr site was pretty evil, I think that to a large part SL fashion bloggers themselves are responsible for its creation.

If you are blogging in public, people will read your blog, and use it as a source of information. If your information is dishonest, or represents only the pink side of the truth, people will be rightfully annoyed, and this will quite understandably lead to nasty reactions.

If some blogger raves about a dress, and you buy it only to find out that it looks gorgeous while you stand, but turns into an abomination as soon as you start to walk, you're annoyed about the dishonesty of that review.

If some blogger gets dropped like 20 dresses from a designer, files away 19 as crap, and raves about the occasional gem (i.e. #20), almost everyone buying from that designer will get seriously disappointed.

'Pooping rainbows', as someone has called it, tends to piss off people to no end, and the creation of that Flickr site, while clearly malicious, is just a natural reaction.

As for the designers: almost everywhere it's the norm that if you perform in public, and take money for that, you have to stand public criticism and/or peer review. The fact that this concept seems so completely alien to SL designers speaks volumes of their mindset. If you create crap and take money for it, it's completely fine for others to criticise you in public. This is not Kindergarten, and you're supposed to be adult if you're on the main grid.

And yes, I'm aware that everyone has to learn first - simply adjust your prices to the quality of your work, and it's fine.

Cajse - I've noticed that the secrets are toned down now!

encore - I exist as Achariya Maktoum in SL!

isara - Thanks for your point of view. Thinking one's own thoughts makes the world go round ;)
