You are the dancing queen

You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life
See that girl, watch that scene, dig in the dancing queen

I watched Mamma Mia a few days ago, and I have to admit that I cried through the whole damned thing. Why? It hit me hard in the mid-life crisis place. My biggest philosophical ponder while watching the movie was, what does having the time of your life mean to me? It means remembering what it was like to be in my 20s without any responsibilities...and I was reasonably irresponsible! Why just go out dancing on Friday when Wednesday had plenty of free time? I recall that I danced a lot, back then (embarrassingly enough I even competed in a low-level ballroom competition, winning first place in rhumba :D ).

The tears came from the place inside that's been restraining all that, shoving the desire to dance my way through life somewhere else so that I can attend to other things, like school and the kid and the nuts and bolts of being a ... I think the movie made me yearn for that feeling of freedom again.

On the other hand, I don't know if I can do without responsibility now. There's a different kind of joy that comes from being awake for someone at 4 am. It's a cranky joy, but boy does it make you feel necessary.

I think that's why us 30-something moms play SL. It's a way to regain our 20s. We have no responsibilities in SL, and our joints don't ache after a hard night of dancing. Today's outfit is more Flashdance than Dancing Queen, but the spirit is there. I think Bowie put it best:

Let's dance for fear
your grace should fall
Let's dance for fear tonight is all

I totally agree with what you said about the cranky joy. I have a 3 month old, so at this point it's slightly more crank than joy, but worth it in the end. :)

I really enjoyed reading this post. :)

Hey Autumn! Thanks for replying, and poor you with the 3 month old. So adorable and frustrating, aren't they? Hope you nap. <3
