Wind me up

Allegory Malaprop and I, playing the outfit game

Are you interested in the mechanical, the diabolical, the invention of idle human hands? Coppelia was a dancing doll, so life-like that she gained suitors. Doctor Copelius invented her, wound her up, made her dance for his pleasure. She had all the trappings of life except for a soul...

Charles Babbage saw ballets about mechanical dolls and was inspired to attempt it himself, make a machine that could simulate the decision-making process of the human brain, the difference engine.

So here we are playing Second Life on computers, the long-distant ancestor of Babbage's machine. We're pulling the strings of our own mechanical dollies and making them dance -- but instead of lifeless eyes, we've imbued them with our own soul. Sure, Second Life seems pointless sometimes, but what we've done is extend the spark of creation beyond human constraints and into the realm of imagination...

Ready to don a tutu and dance to the tune of our own invention?

Look at my awesome eyes!

A very thoughtful post. As a ballet Coppelia is usually presented as a comedy, but I've never thought that. Your ruminations on humans and machines are wonderful :) Thanks!
