You can take a girl out of Jersey, but...

I went to the opening of Glam World (a mall containing Minnu Model Skins and Maitreya and stuff) for about five minutes before I froze and had to flee. How to describe it? It was a big, posh, cement block, beautifully rendered, the modernist's answer to a shopping complex. MMSkins and Maitreya both have group giveaways in honor of the event, and I'm wearing the skin.

I have a secret fondness for modernist cement blocky shopping malls (my Jersey roots are showing). I especially love the spare Japanese touches in Maitreya, and the de facto ginger blossom floral arrangement. Reminds me of Thai hotels.

Purely about clothing: I've been falling in love with Kyoot Army of late, because I love the fact that their clothes look like some satanist librarian commissioned them from Wormtongue to wear to a virgin sacrifice. You know, just my style. I'm also in love with OH! WHAT A NEAT BOUTIQUE, and this is because of the beautifully drawn quality of the fabric (also why I love ~silentsparrow~ so damned much) and the floaty perfection of the prims. Yay, clothes.

See, stick a girl in a mall and all she can talk about is clothing. Not that this is a bad thing.

Drow on a Bespa

Everyone's been posting their Christmas frocks, and I kind of wanted to do the same. By birth I am Buddhist (Thai mom) and atheist (American dad), and spent several formative years hanging out with Jewish pals in college. The result is that I have an ambivalent sort of attitude toward the Xmas event. However, the strange thing about Second Life is that Christmas is this big, creative, interesting time, and it inspires our fabulous designer to make the cutest kitschy stuff ever.

The Grinch is still strong in me, however, so I decided upon the green version of /artilleri/'s naughty or nice set, paired with Kyoot Army's Bird Skull Winter Set (blogged over here!). Mmmm, skulls and ocelot fur. My inner Drow claims that she is a postmodern Christmas elf, although I have my doubts.

I tooled around the /artilleri/ sim looking at all the witty decorations. The Bespa scooter can be rezzed for free right outside of the store! My inner Drow says that it beats the shit out of reindeer.

Vaguely incestuous poseballing

As promised, here is my neighbor Pipsqueak Fiddlestick's romantic snowy garden in Caledon Wellsian. She's an interesting one; when I asked her about the summer version, she made gleeful reference to kissing near the deadly nightshade. "It'll be somewhat Shakespearean," she said, "love and a little danger." This garden has romance in the cold. I like the creative mixing of romance metaphors; instead of dancing near a fireplace, Pipsqueak has a number of places to dance knee-deep in the snow.

What is the nature of love in Second Life anyway? Recently, a few fashion bloggers have discussed the sad turn of their SL love lives. It's all situated so deeply inside of the technology that the two are inextricable. Do you offer to let them see where you are on the grid? Do you demand reciprocation? Do you go through a formal "partnering" ceremony? Does s/he have any alts? If you you fake it? ...Does HE?

Because I'm married IRL, I've got a pretty strong line dividing reality and the playful way in which I treat Second Life relationships. Therefore, when I needed to find someone to pose with me in a romantic garden, I chose a guy who is my defacto little brother. I've known Giuseppe Spicoli for a long time IRL, and know that while he'd probably enjoy the process of virtually dancing with my avatar, he isn't going to take it to the LUUUUURV place. Giuseppe's been around the grid since early 2006, and lives in the Wastelands. He's got the big drive-in theater and graveyard, and spends his time hosting variety shows in his postapocalyptic coliseum. He actually went and invested in some Victorian dress-up clothes so that he could show up as my date for Caledon functions.

We traded adolescent comments about poseballs as we tooled around the garden. At least this time I didn't put on my boy avatar and make Giuseppe play the bottom. :D He's long suffering, is Giuseppe. All adolescence aside, I really enjoyed dancing. It feels tender to look at the screen and squish someone that you care about. I guess this is how SL and RL intermingle; even if it is an extremely vicarious experience to watch yourself slow dance on the screen, it's still slow dancing, and you can't help feel like you're dancing with someone. You are; there's a ghost in their shell. I guess that's how some SL relationships actually work.

Christmas is Freebie Season in SL

This post is dedicated to the hardworking and civic minded women at SL Free*Style and Fabulously Free in SL, as well as the freebie creators that they blog. Christmas seems to bring out the freebie spirit in designers, so I've been watching these blogs carefully of late. [Edit: And you, Sherpa! And all the other people I plumb forgot cause I posted this before coffee!]

I look forward to these posts every day not just for the free stuff, but for the opportunity that these posts give me to explore new parts of the world. Also, Designers are at their most whimsical when they make freebies. Often you'll get an item that you wouldn't normally invest your L in, but that you swiftly find is a neat part of your wardrobe. Sometimes freebies become the staples, like the Pixeldolls' Cimmaron pants, or the hair that I'm wearing in this picture (which has to be the most ubiquitous free hair in SL).

Thanks to freebie makers and hunters and bloggers everywhere.

Pair skate!

Elric Anatine and Pipsqueak Fiddlesticks and I share a high-mountained cove in Caledon Wellsian, right by the hub. Lucky for us three we share a sensibility with regard to trees (never enough) and buildings (classic and organic). Recently, Elric begged our governor, Desmond Shang, to ice over the river for skating. It was an excellent idea; but my neighbors went far beyond just getting us ice.

We decorated for winter! I put up all of my Heart Gardens winter trees, and Pipsqueak made a snow-heaped romantic garden. I'll take photos of that at some other point, but I recommend dragging your squeeze there to enjoy the mistletoe.

Elric spent the better part of a day making two single-skate and two pair-skate choreographies that skate you all over our little wooded cove. He's even provided a pair of free skates; you don't have to bring your animated ones, the poseballs take care of it all!

Miss Darkling Elytis was kind enough to come and skate with my boy avatar. Darkling is in Pica (Magpie Lolita) from ~silentsparrow~, which includes those gorgeous, fluffy prim wings. They kept getting caught in my teeth! (silent sparrow, 176, 138, 729). I am in Silver Rose's new suit, Changeling, in pine. It's got lovely prim cuffs and fabric, and can be found at her flagship store (Caledon VictoriaCity).

And dissolved into a puddle of ice.

Oh the humanity!

Yes, it's my neighbor Elric Anatine's latest snowman. I took a photo of the last one here. :D

This is one of the first photos that I took of my avatar, a few months after I created her. I still hadn't settled on a shape or skin that felt like "me," so I'm using the freebie Caramella skin and a random shape from Free Dove. Hat by Skye Qi, dress was my FIRST from ~silentsparrow~. Freebie "slither" necklace and Diversity hair's Brat in black.

Miss Lavendar Beaumont tagged me to discuss eight random facts about myself.

(1) Looking at RL me, nobody would ever guess that I'm half Thai.
(2) I have a three year old daughter.
(3) I am getting a PhD in education, in my (almost) last year.
(4) The fine girls of Closet Crisis inspired me to keep this fashion blog.
(5) I get all dressed up in SL and then forget to go out and have fun. :D
(6) Indoor spaces in SL make me feel claustrophobic, as if I'm playing Doom or Quake or something!
(7) I'm a huge anime and manga fan.
(8) I'm also an enormous geek and like to play RPGs, both online and tabletop.

Cheers. I tag hyasynth, Jackal Ennui, Violet Voltaire, Siri Woodget, Michael Smith, and (evil laughter) all of Caledon.

Good thing there's no SL smellovision

I was in New Orleans in 1998 for Mardi Gras. The city has a thick, rich, disgusting smell, and lying over the top of the city was a thin veneer of glitz. "You mean people actually bare their breasts for fifty cents worth of beads?" I asked a friend in disbelief.

Then I sat down at Cafe Du Monde and had a chickory coffee and beignet, and took a good look at the city. I'd think up a metaphor, like "beautiful as a cultured, aging courtesan" or something, but I don't have to. The town is unapologetically interested in having fun, and it has good bones; not even the overdone makeup can hide its tough elegance.

Tableau put me in mind of wandering the streets, blood racing with the excitement of watching normal social rules get subverted, something strange and beautiful (and sometimes grotesque) at every turn. It's got brilliant lights and saturated colors and the swamp and the graveyard, but with none of the festering trash in the sewers, and none of the smell of excess.

It's a beautiful sim. It in, I feel like an illustrated girl in two dimensions, the hero of my own brightly colored graphic novel.

Clothes. I ran into Violet Voltaire the other day, out shopping for an outfit to suit a new jewelry set she'd just made (I saw it on her! It's awesome!). She was wearing some of Jackal Ennui's Reckless boots, which I coveted as soon as I saw them. I asked Jackal what to wear with them, envisioning something fluffy and pink and contrasting, and Jackal said dryly: Something urban, please.

This is as close as I can get, really, because my avatar's such a girly girl.

Chickory coffee and a beignet, kthx

Sundials in the snow

Miss Soleil Snook of Caledon Stormhold held the grand opening of Snook's Garden Center yesterday. Her garden really suits the wooded beauty of Stormhold, giving some formality to the high trees and jagged peaks. I used to live in Stormhold, and sometimes I still hanker for the weathered stones, the river, the waterfall, and the trees... Urban planning FTW. I wish more of Second Life had it. There's nothing more jarring than a strip club next to a formal teahouse, although I guess this mirrors real life in a sadly realistic way.

But can my skirt fit into the privvy?

Small side note, Miss Snook is one of the few people I know that tries to play her avatar as an older woman. I admire that; she's gone through a good deal of trouble to age the avatar's face and body appropriately, and often roleplays stiff joints, especially during dances. I made a "me" avatar once that tried to replicate my real life body -- boy that was weird. I'll blog it someday.

I haven't studied formal gardens much (although I have a preoccupation with them), but I suspect that it's all about the vistas. Miss Snook's flowered archways are especially nice. I'm not sure what magic she uses to keep them green and flowering in the middle of this winter chill.

Yeah, yeah, I still need to set the dual layers of this frock with my skirt script.

Something tells me it's all happening

In a quasi-mystical way, I sometimes wonder whether the initial impulse that created the universe wasn't "God was lonely" but rather "God really felt like playing with his new cosmic tinker toys." I see this echoed around us in Second Life, because the urge to create is the foremost reason why (some) people enter this world.

I've pondered the connection between Second Life and the afterlife before; in both places, everything is possible except corporeal sensation. In SL we have all the imaginative reign that we want with none of the physical sensations (except sight and hearing, which is perhaps why music is so big in SL). But we can always create.

I've wandered (lonely as a cloud, yeah) through so many amazing sims that are completely empty because of the urban sprawl that is land creation. Unlimited server space, new ideas, and continents upon continents of lovely worlds that are vastly underpopulated. Despite this, what are we God-like creators gonna do? Tigers got to hunt, birds got to fly, man he got to make things as time go by (to brutally murder Vonnegut's Bokonon).

I love new sims, especially Le Zoo. It's shiny and full of the curious poking at the animals and shops. The detail is fabulous, right down to the Zoop (and the poop), and you can even swim with the sharks. Story, hrm. I usually invent a tale for a sim (like my own land, Caledon Wellsian, is clearly the playground of the new hard-working steampunk inventor class who got rich on their patents). Le Zoo doesn't really need a story. It's...a zoo.

The monkeys stand for honesty, giraffes are insincere
And the elephants are kindly but they're dumb
Orangutans are skeptical of changes in their cages
And the zookeeper is very fond of rum
Zebras are reactionaries, antelopes are missionaries
Pigeons plot in secrecy, and hamsters turn on frequently
What a gas--you've come and see,
At the zoo
