Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! I don't know about you guys, but my avatar's probably going to party more than I am tonight (ah, being a toddler mom and staying in).

Actually, this observation feeds into something I've long pondered. I think Second Life helps us 30, 40, 50-somethings extend the irresponsible fun of our 20s with few real life consequences. Is Second Life our vicarious 20s, forever?! Is that why avatars look perennially 24?

The avatar insisted on wearing red tonight, so she chose Ingenue's Ginger frock, *TRUTH* Sunday hair in black topped by the Elegance Hats petal hat, and gloves snitched from ~silentsparrow's~ blutengel dress. (And of course my favorite Violet Voltaire necklace.)

For those of you that joined Ladies who Adventure, thank you. If you feel like IMing me with neat new places to explore, please do! The group can most definitely be used for travel tips. I'll be planning something new for us to do after the first.

Pink boots of ... pinkness

"Why," I thought to myself, "The heck. Did I buy these awesome shoes in pink of all colors? Is it because my daughter is brainwashing me with 'pink is the best color ever' propaganda? Is it because I actually wanted shoes that I could only wear with like, three things?"

I decided that I bought these shoes in pink because I need to maximize the pink in my wardrobe. Therefore, I ferreted out of my wardrobe:

***Dress: ~silentsparrow~ Penny frock in pink
***Socks: -corduroy- dotty leggings in white
***Shirt: Winter Moon *WM* Polka Dot Blouse in white
***Skin: /artilleri/ lily (porcelain) memphis
***Necklace: Second Mirage black pearl and silver cameo
***Hair: Nylon Outfitters Curly Hair
and of course
***Boots: Shiny Things chunky boots in pink

SL ambition for 2008!

The author in Hard Alley

I want to start thinking about Second Life differently, again. An IM from someone who asked if my Lady Adventurers group was still active made me realize that all I've been doing lately in SL is freebie hunting and taking photos of my clothes. While I absolutely adore this hobby, I wouldn't live my real life like that, would I?

When I was a teen, I went to Australia to help my father with cave insect collecting research (that's an entirely different story). I slept outside under the stars, and not only that, imagined that I was living the life of a cowboy (ringer) out in the bush. It was glorious, and I thought to myself that there would be no better life -- outside every single day under the stars, doing strangely fulfilling things with your body. When I was on a horse under the sky, I felt like I was flying.

Life as flight. Maybe I try to recreate that in SL, especially by living in a garden (I love my ruin) and not boxing myself in. I've rarely felt comfortable inside of a house in SL. The one exception is probably Jackal Ennui's skybox -- she lives on the roof of it, and every now and again I stop by and clutter the place up with a plushie or pumpkin or something.

This virtual life is strange, it's boxed in so neatly on my computer, you'd think I wouldn't mind even more boxes. I mean, I look around and find myself in many boxes -- my apartment, my room, my computer, my Second Life screen...and yet, once I get all the way inside of those boxes, what I want most is the dream of the open sky.

I suppose that if you can't get it any other way, SL sure is an option.

Maybe I'll devote 2008 on SL to maximizing my time exploring the world. The Lady Adventurers group was intended to do just that -- put on Victorian frocks and explore wild and wooly places in SL with a group of like-minded ladies. I think I'll make an effort to start it back up and throw exploratory events that combine fashion and frolic in a way that'll become an SL happening. "Oh look! It's the Victorian chicks in frocks -- in Hard Alley!"

Right. That's my goal.

Merry Christmas from the road...

Do you ever feel like a lolcat? Anyway. Here I am in Gibson, all decked out in Bare Rose. I was reckoning that the assortment of blades might come in handy for carving Christmas turkey.

Is everyone surviving the holidays? I've got bronchitis, a sick child, and several 10 hour road trips lined up, but the main point of it all is to enjoy the rich and strange experience that is XMAS. The Sopranos were on Elmo (what?). Girls are off their diets. And the eggnog sure is strong...

Merry Christmas from a hotel room full of snoring family, while my avatar snatches a moment of cyberpunk dreaming.

Christmas in corsets and skulls

A few things conspired to make me feel that special Christmas decadence today while I stood around my cold and snowy land. First, a lovely group gift of a scarf and tights from Kyoot Army. The little Christmas skulls (embossed on the fabric, which you sadly can't see in this photo) made me ponder death in the midst of all this rebirth. Quite appropriate, especially considering that my favorite Christmas movie is actually The Last Temptation of Christ, heh.

Second, Rosemary (creator of OH! WHAT A NEAT...BOUTIQUE) posted a notice that she finished making her holiday corsets. I get a visceral reaction to pretty clothes; they make me purr. I purred all over her black sequined corset, and I think I'm going to keep it on for a week. (Good thing the avatar doesn't sweat, eh?)

I'll leave you with this snippet that has been on my mind, simply because my bottom's cold from sitting on the snow all day:

Years and years ago, when I was a boy, when there were wolves in Wales, and birds the color of red-flannel petticoats whisked past the harp-shaped hills, when we sang and wallowed all night and day in caves that smelt like Sunday afternoons in damp front farmhouse parlors, and we chased, with the jawbones of deacons, the English and the bears, before the motor car, before the wheel, before the duchess-faced horse, when we rode the daft and happy hills bareback, it snowed and it snowed.

silence .is a looking bird:

A number of gorgeous people are blogging about Kyoot Army and their new sim, Silent:
-- Deux Looks
-- Does this make my ass look fat?
-- Shop til u drop
-- Shopping Card Disco
-- Kyoot Army itself
-- And more people, of course, but sadly your posts have scrolled off the Fashion Planet front page and I can't get to them (leave me a comment and I'll link to your post :3 ).

I had to join in the throng, because it suits my clothing sensibility to a T. There's nothing more fun than wearing the right clothes in the right place, even though the swamp water tends to cling to my velvet skirt.

The sim reminded me of Anne Rice's words about New Orleans:

"You know, the sky really does turn violet at twilight. That really happens. The oak trees really do meet their branches over the street."

I'll be in Baton Rouge (in real life) at Christmas time, and I'll get to see the sky fade to violet noir myself.

In lieu of braining...

My avatar got all warm today in Pushbutton Industries' Two-Button Sweater, which I would like to borrow from my avatar's closet and put on right now. It's probably less scratchy than the wool sweater that I'm wearing IRL, and the little flower design makes me want to pet my monitor.

More stuff I like includes this caLLie cLine skirt from the "Ugly duckling" runway series. It is fluffy. It is feathery. It was honestly made just to tempt me to get it. Fluffy skirt love!

(Shuddup. I know my brain is gone. It's the end of the semester, see.)

Balderdash special edition; outfit freebie

Saiyge Lotus (Balderdash) released a gorgeous, relatively low prim gypsy wagon in a Yule special edition. I drooled all over the red wood interior and scrollwork exterior, and then totally got it. I have a sad addiction to her wagons, and I'm looking forward to the Spring thaw when I can put out this wagon surrounded by wildflowers. (Caledon Morgaine, 64, 154, 22)

Just last night at the ball, I was thinking that my boy avatar needed a new outfit. And lo, my boy avatar can haz a freebie too! Isn't he lovely? He's in the ~icicle~ suite from ~silentsparrow~, a unisex group gift found outside of the main store. I removed the ruffly cuffs to make it more manly and stuff. hyasynth was nice enough to keep the last group gift up as well, so if you aren't a member yet (apply inside the store), you can totally snag them both. Caledon & Winterfell unite

Today, I had the following brief conversation with Darkling.

Said she, "I'm trying on my dress for the ball!"

Said I, "What ball?" I've been living under the rock of finals week, and hadn't had a chance to attend to Caledonian news much.

"Why," Darkling said, "THE ball! The Caledon-Winterfell union!" The two continents have merged, you see, with the creation of the sim Caledon Cape Wrath. To bless the joining of the continents, TPTB decided to throw a to-do.

"I warn you," Darkling continued with her customary sly smile, "I look loovely in this frock; it'll be hard to outshine me."

Miss Raymaker is undoubtedly wearing a Vintage Clothing Reproductions frock, Skye Qi is her favorite designer

I was immediately thrown into a tizzy, and asked what colors she wore, so that I could at least complement such a fine dress. I didn't have time to shop, so I put on some old ~silentsparrow~ favorites, and added another beautiful hat from Elegance Hats.

Then, clothes all firmly in place, Darkling and I collapsed like Pre-Raphaelite maidens with too-tight corset stays.

Heliotropic Unsustainable is in the Paeoti Regal outfit and skirt from Nymphetamine

Later, there was the ball. I don't know why I bothered finding a frock, I danced half the night as my boy avatar anyway (the better to use the blue waltz ball). I got to salsa with Abigale Raymaker, one of my first friends in Caledon, and then met Miss Moo Money, the owner of the land that we were dancing upon. Miss Money is an old and well known denizen of SL, and it was very lovely to dance with her.

I covet Bela's skin from Nomine

After that, I danced with my RL turned SL friend, Heliotropic Unsustainable, and my final dance was with the stunning Bela Lubezki (I swear I didn't dance with her because we complemented each other's dresses, honest).

It was fun. Nothing like waltzing to a madrigal to make you feel like Christmas is here.

Caledon Studios opening party

Last night was the opening party for Caledon Studios in Caledon Penzance. (Caledon Penzance, 57, 184, 23)

There are so many creative people in this Second Life place. A few of them got together and decided to start making interesting movie trailers, with the purpose of creating an eight minute movie short at the end of it all. To "put a fun front" (in Mr. Sputnik's words) on their work, they created a portion of the Penzance sim named Caledon Studios. It looks a lot like a cross between Hollywood and Victorian Steampunk, with little stores devoted to costuming and photography and filming, and a few neat sets where people can play and snap photos.

What an excellent idea. I love it when people create grown-up playgrounds in Second Life. Makes my journeys in this world feel worthwhile! With movie music playing in the background, I danced the Charleston alongside Miss Darkling Elytis, who has a press located in the Studios.

I also spotted a glamorous couple completely clad in ~silentsparrow~ (picture above). They looked so elegant I had to snap a photo. Xyrra Reymont & Chaos Richard are wearing ~silentsparrow~ ashes to ashes (the lady) and limited edition Kiri in night (the gentleman).

I'm wearing OH! WHAT A NEAT...BOUTIQUE's Overkill frock (I was a bad girl and didn't install the prim skirt script). Under it, fishnets from a freebie box, and the sorrow undershirt in ash from the ~silentsparrow~ sorrow set. Also, Tillie hat by Elegance Hats, Hiccup's Amelieish hair, and Tete a Pied's Gothic Corbeau skin. Darkling (left) is wearing the Brigitte silver gown by Ivalde, Twiggy bob hair by Cake, Lirilith skin in LE Nomine, Shiny Things classic pumps, and the new Mechanica jewelry set by Shiny Things. Forgive me for not linking! I'm running off to RL now!

Five fluffy Friday ... er, things.

(1) If you haven't done the Sin Skins pearl hunt, go do it. It's happening until Monday. My skin, lashes, eyes and nails are from this hunt, and that's only four of the twelve items! (Sin Skins, 128, 128, 0) (Hints for finding stuff here.)

(2) Eight lovely shoe freebies at the Mary Jane Shoes Christmas ornament freebie hunt. Warning: the ornaments are tough to find. Definitely pool resources with everybody at the store, because you'll need it! (Three hints to start you off: Santa, flowers, tree.) ( Chalanties, 128, 128, 0)

(3) As always, Second Mirage's advent calendar giveaway. Pretty cameo today. (Second Mirage, 71, 15, 23)

(4) In love with Philotic Energy. The other day I found the shop at Le Zoo, bought some hair, and died because it was so cute. Today, a fabulous tip from SL Freestyle led to poking through their group for a notice marked "Stuffs." Wow. So many free styles to try on, and I actually adore them all. (Imogen 56, 19, 56)

(5) Along with all that free stuff I'm wearing Draconic Kiss's new winter coat. It's so gothic loli and cute, and I love Draconic's prims. (the coat comes with a fluffy collar that I'm not wearing, in three more colors.) (Koreshan, 159, 47, 24)

Velvet aboveground

Here is the ~silentsparrow~ creator, hyasynth Tiramisu, in her own kiri suit in the mist color. She's wearing Calico Creations Calico hair in silver, and Shiny Things Chunky Ribbon Boots. If you look closely, you can see that the necklace and earrings she's wearing are not-yet-released Shiny Things as well, the Mechanica set. Mmmm.

~ silentsparrow~ had a limited edition hunt today for the kiri suit. There might even be a few left on the sim!

How to describe the suit. It is formal dark Victorian wear with impeccable prim tails and cuffs and jabot, with enough bits for men as well as women in the box (almost enough for a suit each), and brocade that makes me want to lick the fabric.

Do you have a sim that feels like home away from home? ~silentsparrow~ is like that for me. On nights when I feel like people watching, I head to a quiet corner of the store, park myself on one of the comfy couches, and stare at the nice avatars as they stare at clothing. I especially love it when they put on their new outfits. I own most of ~silentsparrow~, I admit it (my group tag isn't "twittery fangirl" for nothing), but I love seeing how different everyone looks.

This is something that I love about Second Life clothing. We can all have on exactly the same thing, but because our bodies, skins, hair and -- and taste are so different, we all look different. It's just like real life, only everything actually fits (and damn, I envy my avatar's ability to wear just about anything s/he wants).

My boy av is in the dusk color, looking like some sort of debauched Oscar Wilde character. He's humming Velvet Underground's I'm waiting for my man.

Free, free, free

I'm wallowing in freebies, and by that I mean I could probably put on a new one every hour for the rest of the day. Sin Skins is having a pearl hunt that is on until Monday 12/17, twelve free items for the skin, eyes, lashes, and nails. Such great stuff! Here, I'm wearing the Clara Bow skin, Tipped Vanity Lashes, and Intense Violet/Obsidian Eyes. I've never really played with lashes before, but I like how fluffy these look.

Yesterday, to celebrate the end of finals, I stopped by Barerose to see their new collection. Such great stuff! I instantly fell for the First Queen set. The fabric is gorgeous (there's also a blue version, but I'm a sucker for orange), and the prims fit me quite well.

All of this goes well with the other lovely freebie from today, Second Mirage's Fiona leather cross (available until the end of the day from Second Mirage, join the group and touch the advent tree).

"While the grid is down" meme:

What's your favorite place in all of SL? Can be a sim, a shop, an amusement park, whatever.

(Post the question and your answer in your blog!)

*

My answer: I think I like Koreshan best. It's got a faded carnie feel to it that makes me feel instantly at home. Amazing shops + things to stare at, SL at its best.

Violet Voltaire's My Violent Heart

I love Violet Voltaire's new necklace with great love. I am going to weld it to my skin. Luckily, my inner post-apocalyptic rockabilly drow (don't you have one?) is probably into that kind of thing. Find it at ~All Dolled uP~ Doll avatars, Salutaris 2, 162, 52, 313.

Critical "skin" theory

I've been reading some of Richard Delgado's critical race theory lately. His main point is that if you aren't black, you can never know what it's like to be black. Skin IS important. This is something you find out (to paraphrase Delgado) the second a police man lets you off easy on a ticket because you aren't black. Delgado says that when this happens, you should ask the policeman whether he would've done it if you weren't white. He says this will help everyone wake up to the prejudices ingrained in their behavior and enable social change.

I was thinking about this as I stared at my Skins folder. I only own a few skins deeper than "cream," partly because when I try to look ethnic, I go for Asian. This is because of my own background; I'm half Asian but look entirely white, which confuses everyone who meets me, and often confuses me too.

Much like Barak Obama, I grew up in Hawaii and was treated prejudicially because of the color of my skin. The default skin color in Hawaii is a soft mocha color, a melange of pan-Asian and Pacific Islander peoples who all intermarried to create what people who live there call Locals. White skin symbolizes plantation owners in Hawaii, or tourists who colonize through money (and wear knee socks on the beach). I lived through "kill Haole" day, but that wasn't the worst part; the worst part was having few friends. The irony was that I probably had more Asian blood in me than most of the people bullying me, but a strange genetic fluke rendered my skin pale instead of tan.

This is not to say that I didn't meet many excellent Locals in Hawaii. I did. I love my old home town of Hilo, and wave virtual fingers at all the people who looked beyond my skin to get to know who I was.

Have I earned slipping into a black skin? I don't know; probably not. I understand what racism feels like. I understand what it's like to be judged based upon the color of my skin. I don't, however, know what it's like to be black. The interesting part of Second Life is that you can literally slip into a black skin and try it out.

So I did.

(Small side note about clothes. I had to have this dress the second Ivalde posted their fashion update. Also, the earrings are today's Second Mirage giveaway -- go get them! They're gorgeous!)

Dipsy's walking with his hat on, very proudly into view

This is the third in Elric Anatine's set of misguided snowmen. Previous posts are here and here. You can check them out at Caledon Wellsian, right near the hub.

Mmmmmmmm. Elegance Hats. Ivalde's sim had a fashion show today (which I sadly missed due to RL). However, the second Elegance Hats put out new items, I rushed over to see.

I was instantly suckered in by this one, the Eliza (comes in three other colors, rose, brown and black). So vaguely smushed! So riveted and violet! So gently draped with tulle! Such a perfect match for the more purple items in my Victorian wardrobe!

Made me hanker to talk with a thick cockney accent and hope for my Pygmalion to wander by...

Edit: I just got back from Subversive Vavoom's new shop, where I snagged several of Violet Voltaire's new necklaces. Go look at the pretty she created -- all that delicate metal work! Now it's miiiine, my own, my preeeciouss...er. Sorry.

You can take a girl out of Jersey, but...

I went to the opening of Glam World (a mall containing Minnu Model Skins and Maitreya and stuff) for about five minutes before I froze and had to flee. How to describe it? It was a big, posh, cement block, beautifully rendered, the modernist's answer to a shopping complex. MMSkins and Maitreya both have group giveaways in honor of the event, and I'm wearing the skin.

I have a secret fondness for modernist cement blocky shopping malls (my Jersey roots are showing). I especially love the spare Japanese touches in Maitreya, and the de facto ginger blossom floral arrangement. Reminds me of Thai hotels.

Purely about clothing: I've been falling in love with Kyoot Army of late, because I love the fact that their clothes look like some satanist librarian commissioned them from Wormtongue to wear to a virgin sacrifice. You know, just my style. I'm also in love with OH! WHAT A NEAT BOUTIQUE, and this is because of the beautifully drawn quality of the fabric (also why I love ~silentsparrow~ so damned much) and the floaty perfection of the prims. Yay, clothes.

See, stick a girl in a mall and all she can talk about is clothing. Not that this is a bad thing.

Drow on a Bespa

Everyone's been posting their Christmas frocks, and I kind of wanted to do the same. By birth I am Buddhist (Thai mom) and atheist (American dad), and spent several formative years hanging out with Jewish pals in college. The result is that I have an ambivalent sort of attitude toward the Xmas event. However, the strange thing about Second Life is that Christmas is this big, creative, interesting time, and it inspires our fabulous designer to make the cutest kitschy stuff ever.

The Grinch is still strong in me, however, so I decided upon the green version of /artilleri/'s naughty or nice set, paired with Kyoot Army's Bird Skull Winter Set (blogged over here!). Mmmm, skulls and ocelot fur. My inner Drow claims that she is a postmodern Christmas elf, although I have my doubts.

I tooled around the /artilleri/ sim looking at all the witty decorations. The Bespa scooter can be rezzed for free right outside of the store! My inner Drow says that it beats the shit out of reindeer.

Vaguely incestuous poseballing

As promised, here is my neighbor Pipsqueak Fiddlestick's romantic snowy garden in Caledon Wellsian. She's an interesting one; when I asked her about the summer version, she made gleeful reference to kissing near the deadly nightshade. "It'll be somewhat Shakespearean," she said, "love and a little danger." This garden has romance in the cold. I like the creative mixing of romance metaphors; instead of dancing near a fireplace, Pipsqueak has a number of places to dance knee-deep in the snow.

What is the nature of love in Second Life anyway? Recently, a few fashion bloggers have discussed the sad turn of their SL love lives. It's all situated so deeply inside of the technology that the two are inextricable. Do you offer to let them see where you are on the grid? Do you demand reciprocation? Do you go through a formal "partnering" ceremony? Does s/he have any alts? If you cyber...do you fake it? ...Does HE?

Because I'm married IRL, I've got a pretty strong line dividing reality and the playful way in which I treat Second Life relationships. Therefore, when I needed to find someone to pose with me in a romantic garden, I chose a guy who is my defacto little brother. I've known Giuseppe Spicoli for a long time IRL, and know that while he'd probably enjoy the process of virtually dancing with my avatar, he isn't going to take it to the LUUUUURV place. Giuseppe's been around the grid since early 2006, and lives in the Wastelands. He's got the big drive-in theater and graveyard, and spends his time hosting variety shows in his postapocalyptic coliseum. He actually went and invested in some Victorian dress-up clothes so that he could show up as my date for Caledon functions.

We traded adolescent comments about poseballs as we tooled around the garden. At least this time I didn't put on my boy avatar and make Giuseppe play the bottom. :D He's long suffering, is Giuseppe. All adolescence aside, I really enjoyed dancing. It feels tender to look at the screen and squish someone that you care about. I guess this is how SL and RL intermingle; even if it is an extremely vicarious experience to watch yourself slow dance on the screen, it's still slow dancing, and you can't help feel like you're dancing with someone. You are; there's a ghost in their shell. I guess that's how some SL relationships actually work.
